Related: About this forumLet's talk about Trump losing the environmental fight.... - Belle of the Ranch
Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about Trump losing the environmental fight.
Trump has pushed back hard against even modest climate efforts. He's used every rhetorical trick in the book, and he's engaged in a series of high-profile moves that undermine the fight against climate change. He's tried to push his dated beliefs while he's pushing dated, dirty, obsolete, more expensive energy sources. It hasn't worked. A new report from Yale says that even a majority of Republicans are opposed to many of Trump's positions.
The number that the GOP will probably pay attention to the most is the percentage of people who believe climate change is increasing prices. 65% of those surveyed believe climate change is contributing to rising costs, at least a little bit. That number included 88% of liberal Democrats and 42% of conservative Republicans. 58% of liberal or moderate Republicans feel the same way as well. So about half of the Republicans think climate change is causing prices to go up.
If climate change is raising prices and Trump is making climate change worse. Seems like this is yet another way Trump is raising the prices the average American has to deal with. Beyond that, an overwhelming majority of registered voters, about 66% support transitioning the entire US economy to include electricity generation and transportation away from fossil fuels and to clean energy. 57% of moderate Republicans support transitioning. 73% of moderate Republicans want to fund more research into renewables.
But here's another big one. As Trump runs around pulling the plug on wind projects and doing everything he can to hamper renewables. 51% of conservative Republicans support solar and wind on public land. I'm going to say that part again. A majority of conservative Republicans support wind and solar on public lands. Moderate Republicans are at 75%. Democrats are obviously even higher.
Here's a surprising one. When it comes to, strengthening enforcement of industrial pollution limits in low-income communities and communities of color that are disproportionately impacted by air and water pollution. Even 61% of conservative Republicans support it. All other demographics were substantially higher.
When it comes to eliminating FEMA, stopping publication of climate change information, stopping research on climate change, or prohibiting construction of new offshore wind farms, there is not a single majority of any demographic, even conservative Republicans, who support Trump's position.
There are two big takeaways from this. The first is that Trump's position on these topics are so wrong, even his base, which is normally pretty obedient to his whims know he's got it wrong. The second is that the public supports totally transitioning away from fossil fuels with a substantial majority. Even in this polarized political climate, Americans know the future of the country and the world depends on getting rid of the outdated, more expensive energy sources and the emissions that go along with them. We do get some good news every once in a while.
Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.

(4,959 posts)1. Of course the maga base is so disconnected from reality
that they don't realize what Trump and the Republicans are actually doing to the environment. And a good portion of the maga base will vote for Trump and the Republicans regardless of environmental issues because they will be ginned up by the forces which control the zeitgeist in their reich-wing bubble.
