Keith Olbermann’s Guide to Surviving the Media Coverage of Donald Trump

One hundred-and-twelve days into my career as a sportscaster-turned-newsman, Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton were dropped on top of me with no advance notice. One morning I’m in Los Angeles headed to the set of “Third Rock From The Sun” to interview John Lithgow and prepare for the following weekend’s Super Bowl; that afternoon I’m doing a talk-back with Tim Russert about how the president might have to resign.

The next 228 shows are all about Clinton and Lewinsky. Except for those that are about Lewinsky and Clinton. We do an hour each night, whether there’s news or not. Then we debut another live hour. Sometimes a third. Each time I tell the audience that the coverage of the saga is overwrought or unjustifiable the ratings go up. Each time I publicly beg to leave or change the subject the ratings go up further. My hair begins to turn gray and I begin to look even more like a news anchor and the ratings go up again.

If I could survive all that, you can survive the coverage of Donald Trump, on television, radio, the Internet, the blogs, the sites, and what I’m sure you’ll swear by now is a little receiver drilled directly into your skull while you were sleeping.

1. STOP ASKING “WHY ARE THEY COVERING TRUMP ALL THE EFFING TIME?”
They’re doing it for the money.

Big Crowds Rally for Bernie in Washington State

In a big show of support for Bernie Sanders, more than 17,300 supporters turned out for a rally here on Sunday. Earlier in the day, Sanders drew 8,100 people to a high school gym in Vancouver, Washington, as Democrats here gear up for statewide caucuses next Saturday.

Also on Sunday the Sanders campaign filed a report showing that in February it raised a record $43.5 million from 1.5 million contributions averaging about $30 apiece.

Meanwhile, a new poll found more evidence that Sanders would be the Democrats’ strongest general election candidate. According to the Deseret News/KSL poll, Utah voters would favor Sanders over Republican front-runner Donald Trump by 11 points. Clinton led Trump by only two points.

At the site of the 1962 Seattle Word’s Fair, some 10,300 Sanders supporters packed the Key Arena. Another 1,500 people were waiting in a long line to get inside. And in the shadow of the Space Needle, Sanders spoke to another 5,500 more people jammed into an overflow area outside.

In Washington, D.C., the campaign finance report filed with the Federal Election Commission showed Sanders by the end of February had raised $140 million since his campaign began last April 30. He had $17.2 million cash on hand. More than two-thirds of the campaign’s total money raised has come from small-dollar contributors giving $200 or less.

“Our grassroots donors are paving the way for this campaign to compete strongly all the way through the Democratic National Convention in July,” said Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ campaign manager.

More than 96 percent of the money donated in February to Sanders’ insurgent campaign was raised online. Only 195 people in February gave the legal maximum $2,700 donation to Sanders. That means more than 99.9 percent of Sanders’ contributors may give again.

Sanders is on the way to another large fundraising total for March. So far this month, 30 percent of the campaign’s donors are first-time contributors. Overall, nearly 2 million donors have contributed more than 5.7 million times to the campaign since April 30. The number of donors is about twice as many as Hillary Clinton’s campaign claims.

Crowd tops 17,300 for Bernie Sanders rally in Seattle

In Washington state, you can "feel the Bern.” More campaign contributions have gone to Bernie Sanders than any other candidate -- Democratic or Republican.

Thousands show up for Bernie Sanders in Vancouver: 'All I can say is, WHOA!'

Thousands of people filled a Vancouver high school gym Sunday, while thousands of others crowded outside to get a peek of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

Hundreds started lining up outside Hudson's Bay High School Saturday night for the speech which began just before 1:45 p.m.

Only about 5,500 people fit inside the gym for the official speech -- Sanders greeted thousands of other supporters outside the high school.

"All I can say is WHOA!" Sanders said. "One of the reasons this campaign has surprised people is that we're doing something extremely unusual in American politics. We're telling the truth."

Joan Baez calls Donald Trump supporters 'troglodytes,' Bernie Sanders 'speaks to the human condition

Joan Baez calls Donald Trump supporters 'troglodytes,' says Bernie Sanders 'speaks to the human condition'

(snip)
In an interview with AL.com, the iconic folk singer — a liberal activist and longtime advocate for social justice — blasted Donald Trump, his followers and his presidential campaign.

"I think there isn't anybody, any intelligent person, who isn't shocked and surprised and appalled," Baez said, when asked for her views on this election year. "Why people are willing to listen to a demagogue with all the vile stuff going on around him ... these troglodytes ... that's the most frightening thing to me."

She said Trump's extreme ideas on topics such as immigration — his vow, for example, to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border — have turned his political gatherings into "Hitler rallies" fueled by anger, ignorance and fear.

(snip)
"I seldom do this, but I'm really casting my lot with Bernie Sanders," Baez said. "I also think young people are supporting him. Young people are not paying attention to what goes on in the media, but kids are donating to his campaign once a month or once a week."

Weekly Address: President Obama’s Supreme Court Nomination

Source: White House

In this week's address, the President discussed his decision to nominate Chief Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court of the United States. Chief Judge Garland has earned the respect of both Democrats and Republicans through his years of public service. The President made clear that even though we are in the midst of a volatile political season, we should treat the appointment of a Supreme Court justice seriously. The President repeated his call for Republicans in the United States Senate to give Chief Judge Garland a fair hearing and a vote. The President did his job. Now Senators should do theirs and quickly move to consider the President’s nominee.

I fulfilled my Constitutional duty. Now it’s time for Senators to do theirs. I hope that they take the time to reflect on the importance of this process to our country. I hope that they’ll act fairly. And I hope they’ll work in a bipartisan fashion to confirm Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court. That’s how we can uphold our pledge to liberty and justice for all – for our time and for generations to come.

Sen. Sanders letter to AIPAC: I am going to be traveling throughout the West and the campaign

March 18, 2016
President Robert Cohen
American Israel Public Affairs Committee
251 H Street NW
Washington, D.C. 20001

Dear Bob,
I enjoyed the opportunity to chat with you this morning.

As I mentioned, I would very much have enjoyed speaking at the AIPAC conference. Obviously,
issues impacting Israel and the Middle East are of the utmost importance to me, to our country
and to the world.

Unfortunately, I am going to be traveling throughout the West and the campaign schedule that
we have prevents me from attending.

Since AIPAC has chosen not to permit candidates to address the conference remotely, the best
that I can do is to send you a copy of the remarks that I would have given if I was able to
attend. We should be able to get that speech to you on Monday. Any help that you could give us in getting those remarks out to your members would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much. Hope the conference goes well.

Elizabeth Warren: Enough Is Enough, It's Time To Stand Up To Donald Trump

Source: Huffington Post

"Donald Trump is a bigger, uglier threat every day that goes by."

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) is calling on "decent people everywhere" to denounce Donald Trump, saying the GOP presidential frontrunner continues to grow into a "bigger, uglier threat every day."

Warren put up her statement in a Facebook post Monday afternoon. In the first 10 minutes after it was posted, the message was shared thousands of times.

There's a history of demagogues calling those they disagree with "terrorists" and using that as justification for intimidation and violence – and that history is ugly and dangerous. There's also a history of people staying quiet for too long, hoping for the best but watching silently as the threat metastasizes. Donald Trump is a bigger, uglier threat every day that goes by – and it’s time for decent people everywhere – Republican, Democrat, Independent – to say No More Donald. There's no virtue in silence.
