Michigan school district bans backpacks: "We will not take any chances"

We are going to ban everything but the very thing that is used to kill.

A Michigan school district implemented a backpack ban starting Monday over safety concerns.

The policy will be in place through the end of the school year, Flint Community Schools Superintendent Kevelin Jones said in a letter to parents. Students who bring backpacks to school will be sent to the office, where they'll need to call a parent or guardian to come pick up the bag.

"Across the country, we have seen an increase in threatening behavior and contraband, including weapons, being brought into schools at all levels," Jones wrote. "Backpacks make it easier for students to hide weapons, which can be disassembled and harder to identify or hidden in pockets, inside books or under other items."

Students will be allowed to bring small purses with personal items, clear plastic bags with clothes and lunchboxes, Jones said. The bags will be subject to search.

In the past, some school districts across the country have required students to use clear backpacks. Jones said clear backpacks don't completely fix security issues. In a guide for parents, the district wrote weapons can "still easily be hidden in clear backpacks."

A little story about my last weekend at the RBC Heritage tournament

Heads up! Heritage volunteer struck by golf ball, visiting doctor happens to be nearby

Spectators regularly joke about it, but few actually expect to get hit by a stray ball while enjoying the action. That’s what happened Sunday at the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing tournament. Unfortunately for one unidentified Heritage volunteer, he suffered the most unlikely of injuries during Sunday’s final round. Golfers Correy Conners, Lee Hodges and Sahith Theegala were playing the Harbour Town Golf Links’ 9th hole around 2:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon. It wasn’t clear which golfer was responsible, but one of the pros’ drives accidentally struck a tournament volunteer in the back of the head and sent him to the ground, bleeding from a from a small abrasion.

The volunteer walked off under his own power within minutes to receive treatment and waved to the stands at the 9th green. Play was not delayed, and fans applauded the man as he walked off. “He was in good spirits,” Whitler told The Island Packet. “We said, ‘Well, you might be able to get a signed ball.’”

I am the volunteer. You know how the crowd cheers when football player gets up again. I got those kind of cheers.
Also got a signed ball and the ball that hit me.

Working in a toxic position

I have been working for a company for 5 years and the last year, things have become toxic.
Threat to be fired if you don't perform, but refusing to provide a performance review.
Coworker who is rude, condescending and a little unstable making threats.

I have been looking on Indeed and LinkdIn for several months and out of the blue a head hunter called me about a position.
The commute is probably twice of my current commute.

I had the interview on Wednesday that lasted for 2 1/2 hours. I was shocked to have an interview that was that long.
The head hunter says an offer is imminent so I have make the decision.

The position would most likely require more hours, it a small company where everyone wears multiple hats. But sounds like it could be a rewarding job with interaction with people all around the world.

I am 64 with plans to work until I am 70. I don't do well sitting around the house.

Am I nuts in making a change so late in my career? You know what they say about the grass on the other side of the fence.

I have already written my resignation letter with a very scathing review of how I felt I had been treated.

Its only 6 years, RIGHT?

I think I can smell the picture': Trump's stained suit collar goes viral

Most commentary focused on this being the first time a president has been charged with a crime. One eagle-eyed observer zeroed in on a more minute detail: Trump’s suit jacket. Specifically, stains around his collar.

The internet thinks it’s both gross and hilarious. “I think I can smell the picture,” joked @EricVictorino.

Derek Guy appears to have first noticed the soiled ring around the collar of Trump’s jacket. Guy is a menswear writer and founder of Put This On, a “blog about dressing like a grownup.” You may have heard of him when his tweets inexplicably ended up all over the timeline earlier this year.

In Guy’s opinion, the stain on Trump’s jacket “appears to be from cosmetics.” If so, he said that the stain is oil-based.

“Suits should always be dry-cleaned, but oil-based stains will require careful removal,” Guy tweeted, adding, “Don’t wear stained suit jackets when appearing in court.” (The only exception to not wearing stained clothing to court is if you’re Dustin Hoffman in Runaway Jury.)

I have been waiting for this since 2016

That night I consider one of the darkest nights in our countries history sometimes that would only get darker and darker until 1/6/2020.

Maybe now he will pay for his crimes.

South Carolina GOP lawmakers propose death penalty for women who have abortions

Republican lawmakers in South Carolina are considering a change to the state’s criminal code that would make a person who gets an abortion eligible for the death penalty.

The bill being considered in South Carolina, dubbed the South Carolina Prenatal Equal Protection Act of 2023, would redefine “person” under state law to include a fertilized egg, giving it at the point of conception equal protection under the state’s homicide laws, including the death penalty.

How Jimmy Carter Sparked the Craft Beer Revolution

How Jimmy Carter Sparked the Craft Beer Revolution

All of this buzz about Obama's beer had me and a few coworkers thinking; while we're down with Obama and his sweet honey homebrew, he's merely a participant in an age-old tradition of making beer in the comfort of one's own home. In fact, he doesn't even do it himself. He has the White House kitchen staff doing the bulk of the brewing.

Our 39th President, Mr. James Carter, is the true homebrew hero; he and a lesser known man by the name of Alan Cranston, a veteran democratic senator from California. How so, you ask? Well, on October 14, 1978, Jimmy Carter signed the bill H.R. 1337, which contained an amendment sponsored by Alan Cranston. That amendment created an exemption from taxation of beer brewed at home for personal or family use. Essentially, it lifted regulations imposed by Prohibition laws over 50 years previous.
