Michigan fall colors: Map shows when leaves will peak across state

(Detroit Free Press) After a summer of power outages, floods and heat, you just might be looking for a change — and to take a little time off to see some fall colors.

The website, SmokyMountains.com, has some predictions about when and where to see them. Here's a week-by-week look at what the site recommends.

Week of Sept. 13

Foliage in the Upper Peninsula and the tip of northern Lower Peninsula is at near-peak conditions. The rest of Michigan is patchy or will have partial coverage.

Week of Sept. 20

Road trip? Head for the U.P. and the northern counties of the Lower Peninsula. That's were the colors are the best. Some parts in the middle will be nearing peak conditions. The rest of the state is patchy or has minimal colors. ...........(more)

CA: Grover Beach bank manager beaten, called racist slur after asking man to wear a mask

A Grover Beach bank manager and Army veteran says he was called a racist slur and then attacked and beaten in the parking lot — all because he asked a customer to wear a mask.

Police have confirmed they are investigating a report of a hate crime and battery that occurred in the city last week, but they declined to disclose further details.

A., who asked to remain anonymous because he is concerned about his and his family’s safety, told The Tribune he was at work at the Wells Fargo on Grand Avenue the afternoon of Sept. 3 when a man walked in without a mask.

....(snip)....

A. . offered one of the extra masks the bank keeps on hand for customers, to which the man became even more hostile and at one point began rooting through cabinets and drawers in the bank lobby.

A. asked him to stop and warned he would call the police to remove the man from the property.

“Then he says, ‘Well, you f----n’ sp--,’ “ said A., who is Hispanic. “He’s like, ‘Come outside.’” .....(more)

Florida man twerks for officers during traffic stop, gets tased, report says

CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. – While most people would choose to cooperate with police during a traffic stop, some don’t, and some even get violent – but one Florida man got a little cheeky.

Richard Wolfe, 57, of Crystal River, got out of his SUV, bent over, put his hands on the wet floor, and began twerking for the Citrus County Sheriff’s deputy in the pouring rain of Inverness on Tuesday, according to a report by the Citrus County Chronicle.

A bystander recorded the odd encounter, and a video showing Wolfe dancing for the officer in a median on State Road 44 is circulating the internet.

“What are you scared of,” Wolfe said to the police, according to the Chronicle. “I got knives; you got a gun!” Wolfe later took out a knife and threw it into the grass, the report said. ............(more)

Maskhole Diaries: Unruly passengers kicked off JetBlue flight to SoCal after mask argument

SAN DIEGO (KABC) -- Two passengers were kicked off a JetBlue flight from Florida to Southern California after refusing to wear masks and when one became physically aggressive toward airline employees.

Video filmed by another passenger shows a man arguing loudly with crew members, cursing and at one point pushing them.

The airline says the man and the woman traveling with him refused to comply with mask rules despite being asked several times.

The Sept. 8 flight was scheduled to fly from Ft. Lauderdale to San Diego. The man and woman were removed before takeoff. ............(more)

Even in red states, colleges gravitate to requiring vaccines and masks

As students head to college this fall, hundreds of schools are requiring employees and students to be vaccinated against covid, wear masks on campus or both.

But at some schools, partisan politics have bolstered efforts to stymie public health protections.

Events at the University of South Carolina, in a deeply conservative state, demonstrate the limits of political pressure in some cases, even though "South Carolina is a red state and its voters generally eschew mandates," said Jeffrey Stensland, a spokesperson for the school.

....(snip)....

But state Attorney General Alan Wilson weighed in early in August, sending a letter to the school's interim president, Harris Pastides, that a budget provision passed by the state legislature prohibited the university from imposing a mask mandate. Pastides, who previously served as dean of the university's school of public health, rescinded the mask mandate, although he encouraged people to still use them.

....(snip)....

Creswick and Eslinger, who felt strongly that the mask mandate was indeed about health, filed a lawsuit, arguing that the legislative provision cited by the attorney general did not prohibit a universal mask mandate. The state Supreme Court took up the case on an expedited basis and on Aug. 20 ruled 6-0 in their favor. ............(more)

San Francisco: Late night subway service returns to SFMTA in October

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) will operate Muni Metro subway service to midnight as part of its ongoing rail recovery and COVID-19 Muni service expansion that starts Oct. 2.

Monday through Saturday, the last trains will depart their terminals before midnight and will reach the end of the subway tunnel, in either direction, by midnight. The last eastbound Muni Metro train will depart daily at 11:50 p.m. and last westbound train at 12:00 a.m.

Sunday night service will run until approximately 10:00 p.m.

Since May 2021, rail service has run until 9:00 p.m. daily, allowing maintenance crews more time to conduct vital, ongoing maintenance work. Extending Metro Muni service through the subway until midnight allows SFMTA to provide late-night service connections to Bay Area Rapid Transit, while preserving a large part of its late-night subway maintenance window. ..........(more)

Defense in Whitmer kidnap case seeks trial delay

(Detroit News) Defense lawyers late Wednesday asked a judge for a 90-day delay of next month's trial of five men accused of plotting to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, saying they need more time to prepare and investigate the conduct of FBI agents who thwarted the alleged conspiracy.

The request comes five weeks before the Oct. 12 trial in federal court in Grand Rapids, one of the most closely watched cases involving alleged violent extremism in the country. Prosecutors say the accused plotters were driven by anger over state restrictions on travel and business during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the request, defense lawyers need more time to investigate recent developments involving the conduct of FBI agents assigned to the case and to probe the government's use of at least 12 confidential informants and undercover investigators. The lawyers say trial preparation has been complicated by voluminous evidence, including 2 terabytes of information provided by the government in late August.

"The timing and organization of the discovery productions have created significant problems for the defense in preparing for the current trial date," the lawyers wrote. .........(more)

Ron DeSantis thinks the NFL should let asymptomatic, COVID-positive players play

In spite of more than a year with a relative consensus around how COVID-19 spreads, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis believes that asymptomatic, coronavirus-positive NFL players should get the opportunity to play in their games.

During a press conference in Lakeland, DeSantis argued that players who test positive should be able to join their teams on the field if they are not experiencing symptoms. This flies in the face of everything we know about the virus and how it spreads.

“If somebody has had COVID and is vaccinated, all of these different things, then I’d hate to see them put out just for getting some type of asymptomatic, positive test," he said. "So hopefully, they’ll have some rationality to that, and they’ll be full-strength every single day throughout the season.”

NFL rules around positivity are fairly lax for vaccinated players when compared to the 10-14 day quarantines in place in many other professions. Asymptomatic players can return to the team if they receive two negative tests within 24 hours. Symptomatic players must first stop exhibiting symptoms and then test negative twice in 48 hours. .............(more)

Florida man tased for twerking during rainy traffic stop

As recent news out of the Orange County Sheriff's Office will tell you, the law doesn't look too kindly on dance moves. A Florida man found that out the hard way this week, when he was tased after twerking during a traffic stop on September 7.

In video captured by a passing motorist, Richard Wolfe of Crystal River rubs himself on the outside of his SUV while thrusting his hips at a police officer. The 57-year-old proceeds to get down and twerk before dancing into the traffic lanes of State Road 44 in Inverness.

At one point, Wolfe removed a knife from his waistband and tossed it into the grass.

"What are you scared of? I got knives, you got a gun!," he yelled at the officers, per their arrest report. ..............(more)
