Interesting prediction on how primaries and election will go down.

https://www.mediaite.com/opinion/a-prediction-for-how-the-2020-presidential-election-will-go-down/

Snip
My basic view of the race for the Democratic nomination is that it appears very much like the 2012 GOP version of their battle to pick a challenger to a controversial and charismatic incumbent president coming off of a disastrous midterm election. The biggest differences being that Barack Obama’s approval numbers were more favorable than Trump’s, but the economy is perceived to be better now.

Snip

Reminiscent of Romney, Biden is unlikely to win Iowa, but unlike him does not have a natural firewall in New Hampshire. It is likely that South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg will win a cluttered contest in Iowa, and that New Hampshire will be a four-way struggle between him, Biden, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren.

From there, the race will come down to how quickly and decisively the field gets whittled down. In the past, only two or three candidates ever really survived the first two contests, but thanks to the Internet and cable news television, it is far easier for candidates to remain viable without winning either Iowa or New Hampshire (especially for a “cult” candidate like Sanders).

The biggest unknown at this point is whether it is true that Biden is more well suited for a long four-way battle, because his 35% of the Democratic national base can win four-way primaries. Or, is he better off going head-to-head with one candidate early on so that he can secure the nomination with minimal bleeding and party division (this is the plot line Trump fears most, which is exactly why the entire Ukrainian scandal started).

WASHINGTON – Republican Sen. Susan Collins has surpassed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as the most unpopular U.S. Senator, according to a new tracking poll.

The Maine Senator's net approval rating has dropped 10 points since the end of September, leaving her with a 52 percent disapproval rating, a quarterly Morning Consult tracking poll found.

The poll comes as Collins, one of the most moderate Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill, faces a tough reelection campaign for what would be her fifth term.

She was reelected in 2014 with nearly 70% of the vote, but Democrats see her as one of the more vulnerable Republican senators for 2020 where more GOP Senate seats are on the ballot than Democratic ones.

Big Stuff
1.16.20

Good morning. There are 292 days until the presidential election. Lev drops so many bombs on Trumpland, Ukraine does what our scumbags should be doing and the president is getting a summons today.

Note: Hmmm, there are a lot of different ways we could go with today’s rant. Instead, we’ll just say something nice about someone. Sen. Kamala Harris has a great idea, and if we had a working press corps instead of a gaggle of kiss-asses and ambition junkies or if it had come from McConnell, you would have heard about it.

Harris is arguing that judicial nominees should be halted while we wait to find out if the Senate will convict Trump. We freaking love this idea because obviously a criminal shouldn’t be picking judges. We actually thought this would have been a good offensive back in the Michael Cohen days when Trump became Individual One, but better late than never. Thank you, Kamala.

And no, we have not and will not forget about the Democratic senators who have voted to help Trump reshape the judiciary with a bunch of unqualified white guys. It’s why we’ve never seriously considered a couple of them who are running for president. We need to see some aggressive shit from our people in the upper chamber. If they want to be cowards, they can switch parties.

Note two: Some breaking news as we were putting TBS to bed. GAO has released a report saying the withholding of aid to Ukraine was illegal. So for all the Republicans who were clinging to the ridiculous defense that there was no crime, well, you’re fucked. More: Washington Post

Lev-erage

Well that definitely qualifies as a holy shit night. Indicted Giuliani buddy Lev Parnas took to Rachel Maddow’s show last night to take a giant deuce all over Trump and his cronies. Lev named everybody, throwing in Pence and Barr. He argued that it was ridiculous that Trump didn’t know him or what he was doing. The funniest part was Devin Nunes running to Fox to scream that he suddenly remembered meeting Lev.

Parnas’s interview was one bombshell after another, and the best the White House can come up with is to trot out the drunken press secretary to Fox News where she said you can’t trust someone who has been indicted. Lady, you just described Trump’s whole social circle.

Unfortunately for Americans, Susan Collins seems to think we don’t need to hear about this stuff. They are going to try to cover this up. Then we will end their careers. More: Associated Press, Washington Post, The Daily Beast, New York Times

Ukraine but we won’t

To the enormous shame of decent Americans everywhere, Ukraine is doing what our scumbag leaders won’t -- they’re investigating the threats against Amb. Yovanovitch. They’re also investigating the Russians’ hack of Burisma. So White House press corps, try earning your salaries and finding out why the hell Ukraine is doing this but we’re not. The nastier this has gotten, the fewer questions have been asked. Tragically, the press just isn’t up to this shit. More: NBC News

It’s time, Donnie

Yesterday, the House announced impeachment managers and transmitted the articles to the Senate. While Trump’s Fox morons were obsessed with the pens used to sign the resolution to transmit the articles, the rest of us were focused on the president of the United States being a criminal and a traitor.

Today, we will hear from the speaker, the House managers will do a ceremonial procession to the Senate at noon ET. Then, the articles will be read aloud. At 2, Roberts will be sworn in and he will then swear in all 100 senators. After that -- and this is our favorite part -- the Senate will send a summons to Trump. We’re so proud of the Democrats who made this happen. And we tolerate the Democrats who fought us every step of the way.

Damage control? He's 1 point above approval needed

to win (MSNBC daily tracking). He can win with 45% Unless he's below in ALL the states that are swing/purple..

We are f u c k e d

Perhaps he will kill someone on 5th Ave.?

Just be realistic. What can we do to mitigate? Can we instead of concentrating on WH, concentrate on Senate?

Two things I don't get this a.m.

1. So Iran warned the Iraqis and the Iraqis warned the Americans of last night's attack? They were all in cahoots and the attack was a show?

2. When McConnell changes Senate rules he is just talking not allowing new witnesses and documents, right? i.e. the likes of McGahn, Bolton, etc., Right? And the others, like Fiona Hill, Vindman, etc. will be witnesses? And participate in an actual trial.

Parkhomenko's Daily Email: " Penta-gone to shit "

1.7.20

Good morning. There are 301 days until the presidential election. We’re pulling out of Iraq but wait a second no we’re not, John Bolton teases testimony and Republicans are just the worst Part Infinity.

Note: Mark Zuckerberg is a little turd. Actually, that’s being charitable. Mark Zuckerberg is a democracy-destroying little turd. Yesterday, after telling the nation that he was too busy to be impeached, Trump called in to Rush Limbaugh’s show where he divulged that Zuckerberg congratulated him on being “number one” on Facebook. Now look, Trump lies about EVERYTHING, so it’s likely this is just more bullshit. But we know Zuckerberg tried to keep secret a private dinner he had with Trump, so this is on him. Oh and then there’s how he got caught telling employees about his opposition to Elizabeth Warren. And the whole 2016 thing he repeatedly lied about. Show us someone willing to stand up to this weasel, and we’ll show you someone who has our vote. In the meantime, fuck Facebook.

Note two: Someone must be chopping onions in TBS HQ this morning. More: Politico

Penta-gone to shit
As we continue to juggle fear and embarrassment in the Trump years, the Pentagon is not helping. Yesterday, we were mortified to learn that for an hour, neither U.S. military officials on the ground in Iraq or in Washington could answer if the U.S. was pulling out of Iraq. Why? Well, a draft memo from the Pentagon to Iraq announcing our withdraw was ACCIDENTALLY sent to the Iraqi government. Yeah, seriously. So not only are we kicking the hornets’ nest, but we’re doing so with toilet paper stuck to our shoe. Oh and also, we’re preventing Iran’s foreign minister from entering the country to address the UN Security Council because we’re apparently afraid of that kind of thing these days. And all this is happening while the world just sits and waits to see how Iran retaliates. It’s really quite a mess. More: CNN, Foreign Policy, Politico

Dear John

Moustachioed cowardly warmonger John Bolton announced Monday that he will testify in front of the Senate if he receives a subpoena. Bolton apparently lives in a world where it’s cool to look like Yosemite Sam and accept lawful congressional subpoenas only from the chamber you prefer. While we are enormously skeptical that Bolton will ever testify, it does reveal the Senate GOP’s cover-up for what it is. They have a chance to get to the truth, and they are not even the least bit interested. Child coward Marco Rubio was making up all kinds of excuses for why the American people don’t need more answers. Susan Collins joined McConnell (SHOCK!) in saying they should start the process and then worry about witnesses. Only Mittens Romney said he wants to hear Bolton testify. We’re sure the American people will be cool with a cover-up in broad daylight. Right? More: CNN, Washington Post, New York Times

GOPathetic

Aside from liddle Marco’s ass-kissing and Lindsey Graham’s war boner, there were two other reminders yesterday that there are no good Republicans. The first was Rep. Paul Gosar tweeting out a photo-shopped picture of President Obama with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, adding the caption “The world is a better place without these guys in power.” He then defended his garbage actions by claiming he was trying to make some kind of point. You might remember this asshole as the guy whose whole family ran ads against him. Not hard to see why. The second reminder came from Nikki Haley, who just a few weeks ago was one of the moderate Republicans we were told. Well now Haley is tweeting out Fox appearances of herself, and last night she tweeted out that the only people not celebrating the death of Soleimani are Democrats. Thank you, Nikki, for making clear that you are Trump-loving gutter trash. We’re glad we don’t have to watch the nation’s pundits spending the next couple of years pretending otherwise (We know they will anyay, but a newsletter can dream). The Trump administration has for nearly two years ignored mounting evidence that Russian operatives and other foreign actors were deliberately targeting U.S. troops and veterans with online disinformation amplified on a massive scale, a leading veterans group said.

The Department of Homeland Security is agreeing to share citizenship information with the U.S. Census Bureau as part of President Donald Trump’s order to collect data on who is a citizen following the Supreme Court’s rejection of a citizenship question on the 2020 Census form.

Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper sought to douse an international outcry on Monday by ruling out military attacks on cultural sites in Iran if the conflict with Tehran escalates further, despite President Trump’s threat to destroy some of the country’s treasured icons.
