I've been making soup again. Today it was Cheesy Asparagus Potato Soup

I've been looking for a recipe for asparagus soup that doesn't involve a blender. I'm not a big fan of pureed soups. Couldn't find one so I made up my own.

I sauteed about half an onion and some chopped mushrooms in butter, then added a few tablespoons of flour and cooked for a few minutes to get rid of raw flour taste. Next I added chicken stock and brought to a boil. I cut the asparagus into 1/2 inch length, reserving the tips, and added to the pot along with some cubed, baby red potatoes. I didn't peel the potatoes. When that was almost tender I added the asparagus tips. When everything was tender I added half & half and about 8 oz. of shredded cheddar. When it was melted I tasted for seasonings and added a few slices of bacon that I had fried and chopped.

Terrifying for American democracy': is Trump planning for a 2024 coup?

Long read, but very informative.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/nov/14/trump-president-2024-election-coup-republicans

At 1.35pm on 6 January, the top Republican in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, stood before his party and delivered a dire warning.

If they overruled the will of 81 million voters by blocking Joe Biden’s certification as president in a bid to snatch re-election for the defeated candidate, Donald Trump, “it would damage our Republic forever”.

Five minutes before he started speaking, hundreds of Trump supporters incited by the then president’s false claim that the 2020 election had been stolen broke through Capitol police lines and were storming the building. McConnell’s next remark has been forgotten in the catastrophe that followed – the inner sanctums of America’s democracy defiled, five people dead, and 138 police officers injured.

He said: “If this election were overturned by mere allegations from the losing side, our democracy would enter a death spiral. We’d never see the whole nation accept an election again. Every four years would be a scramble for power at any cost.”

Jan. 6 committee subpoenas Stephen Miller, Kayleigh McEnany

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on Capitol released its sixth batch of subpoenas Tuesday targeting some of former President Trump’s highest-ranking staff, including White House adviser Stephen Miller and press secretary Kayleigh McEnany.

The subpoenas to Miller and McEnany focus on the false statements they made promoting baseless claims of voter fraud.

“As a White House Press Secretary you made multiple public statements from the White House and elsewhere about purported fraud in the November 2020 election, which individuals who attacked the U.S. Capitol echoed on Jan. 6,” the committee wrote in its subpoena to McEnany.

The committee appeared to peg Miller as being at the center of an effort to craft voter fraud conspiracies and Trump's messaging ahead of the Jan. 6 rally where the then-president encouraged his supporters to “fight like hell.”

The weather is turning cooler and I've been in a soup making mood.

Today I made Creamy Chicken Vegetable. No recipe, just winging it. I had 3 chicken thighs and broth that I had cooked the other day and was thinking of a way to use them.

I started out by cooking onion, celery and mushrooms in butter until slightly softened. Added a little flour and cooked for a couple of minutes, then added chicken broth and stirred until it thickened slightly. Then I added a package of frozen mixed veggies and some baby red potatoes, cut in small pieces. When the veggies were tender I added some rough chopped baby spinach and let it cook for a few minutes and then stirred in a couple spoons of softened cream cheese and the chicken which I had torn into bite sized pieces. When that was all incorporated I added enough half and half to make the consistency I wanted and tasted for seasoning.

Absolutely delicious and hit the spot. Reminds me of a chicken pot pie without the crust.

Former VA administrator and Georgia senator Max Cleland dies at home

Former U.S. senator and Veterans Administration leader Max Cleland died Tuesday more than 53 years after a live grenade dropped by a fellow soldier in Vietnam robbed him of three limbs.

The injuries, however, did not take the unfettered optimism and grit that helped him climb from Georgia politics to some of the nation’s top offices.

A Democrat bound to a wheelchair most of his adult life, the 79-year-old Cleland was one of the first veterans from the killing grounds of Southeast Asia to enter American politics. He took a state senator’s seat in 1971, three years after his wounding, and went on to serve as top administrator in the U.S. Veterans Administration, as Georgia Secretary of State, a U.S. senator and an appointee in other federal agencies.

Cleland died at his Atlanta home from heart failure, according to a close friend and caregiver.

I just learned that there is a town in Arkansas named Romance.

Romance is an unincorporated community in west-central White County, Arkansas, United States. The community is located approximately halfway between the town of Rose Bud to the north, and the unincorporated community of El Paso to the south. Alternately, the community is about 16 miles (26 km) northwest of Beebe, and less than 5 miles (8 km) east of Mount Vernon.

Considered as a postal designation (ZIP code: 72136), the population of Romance as of the 2010 census was 1,772 residents.

FBI raids James O'Keefe's New York home over Ashley Biden diary

Project Veritas founder James O'Keefe had his New York home raided by FBI agents Saturday, just a day after reporters for the conservative activist group were also searched over the stolen diaries of President Joe Biden's daughter Ashley.

Authorities raided O'Keefe's Westchester County residence on Fenimore Road in Mamaroneck just a day after O'Keefe himself acknowledged Project Veritas was under investigation.

Project Veritas did not publish the diary, as O'Keefe said in a video released Friday that the group could not confirm the authenticity of the diary, its belonging to Ashley Biden or that the contents of the diary were truthful.

The diary was obtained by Project Veritas just a week before the 2020 Presidential Election.
