Kamala Harris leads Gavin Newsom in Democratic presidential primary poll

Alec Regimbal, SFGATE

A new poll shows that Vice President Kamala Harris is the top choice among Democrats and some swing voters to replace President Joe Biden if he chooses not to seek re-election in 2024.

The Echelon Insights poll shows 21% of those surveyed prefer Harris, which gives her a healthy seven-point lead over the group's second top choice: U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Stacey Abrams, a voting rights activist currently running for Georgia governor, came in third with 7%, and New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and California Gov. Gavin Newsom followed with 6% each.

The 15-point gap between Harris and Newsom is surprising given the governor's favorability rating among Democratic voters in other recent polls, including a survey of Democratic voters released earlier this month that showed Newsom leading his California counterpart by about seven points. Newsom has repeatedly said he will not run for president in 2024 even if Biden chooses to step aside, but many political analysts believe he will, despite those assertions.

Those analysts point to Newsom's repeated posturing on the national level as evidence to back up their claims. The governor has spent precious re-election funds on attack ads in Florida and Texas and has repeatedly called on his own party to do more in combating Republican extremism. His recent veto of a popular safe drug-injection site bill has also been portrayed by some as a tactic to avoid being labeled a radical on a national stage.

Gov. Newsom signs law requiring California electors to vote for popular vote winner

Source: KRON-TV San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed into law a bill that will “ensure the state’s presidential electors cast ballots for candidates who win the popular vote and do not instead switch candidates or abstain from voting,” according to a press release from state Sen. Bill Dodd (D-Napa).

Heretofore, if one of California’s electors changed their vote from the state’s popular vote winner when electors cast their votes in the electoral college, their new vote would count. Under SB 103, the elector “would be immediately replaced by a new elector who would cast a ballot for the winning candidate,” the press release states.

“While 33 states and the District of Columbia have laws requiring electors to uphold their voting pledges, many do not have any enforcement mechanism and a majority have no way to make sure electors faithfully comply,” the press release states. “Sen. Dodd introduced Senate Bill 103 amid increased national attention on the manipulation of the Electoral College system following the 2020 presidential election. Although President Joe Biden was the clear winner over President [Donald] Trump, some groups in other states suggested electors might ignore the outcome and ratify Trump instead.”

"This is a critical step toward protecting the legitimacy of our free election process and preventing extreme partisanship from denying the will of the voters," Dodd, who introduced the legislation, stated. "We must ensure our chosen electors uphold their responsibilities and do not go rogue, threatening the underpinnings of our democracy. I thank the governor for signing this needed legislation."
