Everyday chemicals linked to diseases, warns World Health Organisation

Source: The Telegraph

In a landmark report, the WHO warned “synthetic chemicals” had “serious implications” for human health. The global health watchdog suggested so-called “gender-bending” compounds found in toys, PVC flooring and even credit cards should be banned in order to protect future generations.

The study said that more research was needed to fully understand the links between endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) – found in many household and industrial products – and “specific diseases and disorders”.

It found links between exposure to EDCs and health issues such as testicular problems, breast, prostate and thyroid cancer, developmental effects on the nervous system in children and attention deficit hyperactivity in children.

The UN agency said the study, titled State of the Science of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, was the most “comprehensive” report on EDCs to date because it has evaluated several chemicals and related evidence rather than focusing on just one.

Social activist Stephane Hessel dies at 95

AlJazeeraEnglish · Published on Feb 27, 2013

French resistance hero and Holocaust survivor Stephane Hessel, whose 2010 manifesto Time for Outrage sold millions of copies and inspired protest movements worldwide, has died at the age of 95.

Hessel joined Charles de Gaulle in exile during World War II, was waterboarded by the Nazis, escaped hanging in concentration camps and took part in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

The career diplomat was already celebrated as one of the last living heroes of the 20th century when, as a nonagenarian, he became the unlikely godfather of youth protest movements such as "Occupy " and Spain's "Indignados".

UK Activists Look To Use Wasted Food

AlJazeeraEnglish

Published on Feb 19, 2013

Supermarkets around the world insist on having the very best products on their shelves. So much so that they're willing to throw away perfectly edible food, because it doesn't fit their size and cosmetic standards.

Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from Kent in the UK on how campaigners are trying to save that waste.

- The Earth gives us all we need, and much more. There should be no such thing as ''poor.''

"Everyone sits in the prison of his own ideas. A human being is a part of the whole called by us "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." ~Albert Einstein

Denver Police Officers Won't Be Charged In The 2009 Landau Beating Case

By Sadie Gurman | The Denver Post | Updated: 02/09/2013 02:15:52 PM MST

The Justice Department on Friday informed a man who was beaten by three Denver police officers in 2009 that it will not charge any of them with civil-rights violations stemming from the case.

Alexander Landau, 23, said representatives from the department and the FBI called him at about 6:30 p.m. to inform him of the decision.

"They said they didn't feel like they had enough evidence to bring federal charges against any of the officers who were initially involved," Landau said.

The agents did not expound on the decision, he said.

- Clearly the man just stumbled, fell, and hurt himself. Nothing to see here. Move along. Move along.
