Jeb Bush, seemingly perfect on paper, just hasn't caught on with GOP voters

n paper, Jeb Bush is the perfect establishment candidate for the Republican presidential nomination:

A two-term governor of a crucial swing state who oversaw economic expansion and spearheaded education reform.

A conservative, but with a cerebral, optimistic tone that probably won't enrage moderate voters, unlike the unabashed social-issue warriors in the GOP field.

A prolific fundraiser whose advantage stems from the powerful donor networks of his brother, former President George W. Bush, and his father, former President George H.W. Bush.

Yet the former Florida governor — for all his might on paper — has failed to catch on with Republican voters.


In recent weeks, his strongest showing was in the low double digits in polls both nationally and in the states that hold the first contests in the 2016 race for the White House. A CNN/ORC poll taken in Iowa and released Wednesday showed Bush with 5% support compared with front-runner Donald Trump's 22%.

Only women are allowed to live in Umoja. Julie Bindel visits the Kenyan village that began as a refuge for survivors of sexual violence – and discovers its inhabitants are thriving in the single-sex community


Jane says she was raped by three men wearing Gurkha uniforms. She was herding her husband’s goats and sheep, and carrying firewood, when she was attacked. “I felt so ashamed and could not talk about it to other people. They did terrible things to me,” says Jane, her eyes alive with pain.

She is 38 but looks considerably older. She shows me a deep scar on her leg where she was cut by stones when she was pushed to the ground. In a quiet, hesitant voice she continues her story. “I eventually told my husband’s mother that I was sick, because I had to explain the injuries and my depression. I was given traditional medicine, but it did not help. When she told my husband [about the rape], he beat me with a cane. So I disappeared and came here with my children.”

Jane is a resident of Umoja, a village in the grasslands of Samburu, in northern Kenya, surrounded by a fence of thorns. I arrive in the village at the hottest time of the day, when the children are sleeping. Goats and chickens wander around, avoiding the bamboo mats on which women sit making jewellery to sell to tourists, their fingers working quickly as they talk and laugh with each other. There are clothes drying in the midday sun on top of the huts made from cow dung, bamboo and twigs. The silence is broken by birdsong, shrill, sudden and glorious. It is a typical Samburu village except for one thing: no men live here.

My arrival is greeted by singing and dancing from the women. They wear traditional Samburu dress of patterned skirts, brightly coloured shirts and a kanga (a colourful wrap) tied on their shoulders. Necklaces made of strings of vividly coloured beads form stunning circular patterns around their necks. The colourful clothing contrasts with the dry air and terrain, and the harsh sun that picks out the dust that fills the air.

Rebecca Lolosoli is the founder of Umoja and the village matriarch. She was in hospital recovering from a beating by a group of men when she came up with the idea of a women-only community. The beating was an attempt to teach her a lesson for daring to speak to women in her village about their rights. The Samburu are closely related to the Maasai tribe, speaking a similar language. They usually live in groups of five to 10 families and are semi-nomadic pastoralists. Their culture is deeply patriarchal. At village meetings men sit in an inner circle to discuss important village issues, while the women sit on the outside, only occasionally allowed to express an opinion. Umoja’s first members all came from the isolated Samburu villages dotted across the Rift valley. Since then, women and girls who hear of the refuge come and learn how to trade, raise their children and live without fear of male violence and discrimination.

All was not quiet in the Duboce Triangle neighborhood of San Francisco in the early hours of Saturday morning. At around 3:38 a.m., an unknown male approached the residence of Twitch.tv cofounder Justin Kan and vandalized his home with a racial slur.

In footage captured by Kan’s Dropcam, a man walked by with his bike, took out a marker, and proceeded to mar Kan’s garage door with the epithet: “Fuck you gook!” His attack employs a derogatory slur traditionally used against someone of Filipino, Korean, or Vietnamese descent.

Kan, his fiancée, and his two brothers were home at the time. None of them could identify the person in the video or recollect interacting with anyone who might have been motivated to target them: “I can’t remember pissing anyone off,” said Kan in an interview with VentureBeat.


Kan posted the incident on Facebook and Twitter on Saturday morning, saying that he doesn’t know who the individual is and had originally thought the person was homeless. However, Kan is not so sure now following sleuthing by the Twitterverse throughout the day. Others have chimed in with information about the suspect, including Science Inc. partner Peter Pham who opined that as the culprit’s “hat rim was crisp,” and his shoes were “white at base,” these and other details seemed to indicate the suspect was not homeless.

Painted, near-naked ladies on the prowl for cash in Times Square angering tourists

An out-of-control influx of near-naked women jockeying for tips has turned Times Square into the XXX-Roads of the World — shocking children and incensing legions of tourists and New Yorkers alike.

“It’s inappropriate,” fumed Odessa Leitch, 38, watching the provocative parade of ladies with her 12-year-son and 3-year-old daughter at her side.

“Oooh,” added her stunned son, Tyler George, “there are little kids around here.”

Last summer, random Saturday tallies of near-naked women in the area found 21 working between May 24 and Aug. 2. This year, between May 30 and July 14, their numbers nearly doubled to 40 as the line between tasteful nudity and blatant exhibitionism became ever blurrier.

The competition is getting fierce for the cash of gawking out-of-towners or random passersby. Some of the women are accompanied by male muscle to ensure nobody snags a free photo or sneaks a selfie.

One topless temptress goes so far as to softly caress tourists with a feather to get their attention.

Tourist Sarah Lorei’s eyes went wide Saturday as one of the nearly-nudes sauntered past her and her 4-year-old daughter.

“It is offensive,” said Lorei, 40, of Harrisburg, Pa. “It doesn’t make me feel so angry that I want to leave, but I wasn’t really expecting to see anything like that.

A blue minivan owned by a homeless woman in East Greenwich is the focus of a scary attack on Saturday. The woman keeps the van in a park and ride lot in East Greenwich and she lives inside the van.

Police say, 46-year-old John Sommer of East Greenwich was drunk at 2:30 a.m. Saturday when he pulled into the park and ride and started shouting at the woman about her being there saying things like 'It's not a homeless shelter!' He then took it a step further and punched out a window of her van.

NBC 10 spoke with Barbara Kalil of the Rhode Island Homeless Advocacy Project. She said that harassment of the homeless is a growing problem.

"Harassment and intimidation of homeless people happen every single day," she said.



The unidentified woman told NBC 10 that she called police after Sommer left the parking lot. When officers responded, she described the suspect and his vehicle, and police were able to eventually catch up with him in his black Mercedes where they arrested him for DUI.

Trump bypassing dog-whistle messaging Republican leaders use to communicate race/gender subtext

Yet I can’t get enough of Trump these days because his outsized persona is exactly what the Republican Party deserves. For decades, the GOP has been fomenting rage among angry white guys against women, minorities and anything touched by government. To a disturbing degree, that cynical approach has succeeded, with Trump its ultimate manifestation.

The problem for other right wingers is that he’s gone public — too public — bypassing the sort of dog-whistle messaging Republican leaders like Scott Walker typically use to communicate subtexts about race and gender.

It’s a delicate dance for these other Republicans, who try to assure the right-most in their party, the tea party fringe that make up perhaps 10 or 15 percent of the total electorate, of their fealty to far-right doctrine without riling the vast majority of prospective voters in a general election.

From a progressive perch, it is a pleasure to watch the GOP marinate in the stew it has created.

Bear tries to bust through cat door at Idaho condo

Doug Harder said this is not his first run in with a bear. He said a bear and two cubs climbed up the side of his condo onto his second floor deck at the end of May to eat birdseed.
Harder said got another surprise visit when he went on vacation last week. He got back August 5 to find a bear yearling had broken into his condo. He said he left the sliding glass door cracked open to his second-story deck while he was gone. It was open eight inches and he blocked the door jam with a piece of wood.
Harder said the bears got in, ate food and defecated on his carpet. He said the bears did very little damage. He said he closed the door but the bear came back Thursday morning and Thursday night, and that's when he snapped the pictures of it poking its head through the cat door.
