Sincerity test

November 28, 2015

It could have been me in that clinic.

It could have been me in that clinic, I could have been one of the ones who were shot. It doesn’t matter that at 67 I’m well past child-bearing age. It doesn’t even matter that I’m female.

You or I, man or woman, could have been in that Planned Parenthood clinic for any number of reasons: a flu shot, Pap smear, cholesterol or diabetes screening, breast exam, physical exam for a job, tetanus shot, STD diagnosis and treatment, vasectomy, thyroid screening, sex education, smoking cessation, contraception, pre-natal care, anemia testing, or just your basic every day blood pressure check.

Or maybe we could have been there because we gave a ride to a patient. We could have been there to provide escort service through a gauntlet of screaming, epithet-hurling protestors who had no knowledge of or cares about the health issues of those they were intimidating. I could have been there delivering the mail. Or I could have been a doctor or nurse or an aide tending to patients, or a receptionist, or secretary, or janitor. I could have been someone in the process of minding my own business, unaware of the target painted on my back.

It’s just plain foolish to believe that there’s only one reason for anyone to be in a Planned Parenthood clinic. It’s almost as foolish as providing ammunition to someone looking for an excuse to open fire on a roomful of people.

"You are responsible for your wake."

"You are responsible for your wake."

Who is responsible for the shootings in Colorado Springs?

When I was a kid, I saw a sign on a lake that made an incredible impression on me. To this day, I think about that sign: "You are responsible for your wake."

In boating, "wake" refers to the waves created as a boat travels across water. Smaller craft my be capsized and inexperienced swimmers may drown in the wake of larger boats. Boat operators are legally responsible for that damage.

The same rule should apply to politics and news organizations. If you use misleading propaganda to vilify a specific group or to raise funds for your campaign, then you are responsible for your wake. When your words encourage or support the ideology of groups or individuals associated with domestic terrorism, then you are responsible. When you imply or state outright that Second Amendment Solutions are appropriate, then you are responsible for the violence that occurs when people take your words to heart. When you intentionally empower people who hate, you are responsible for the actions that follow.

If you don't condemn it, then you condone it.

Yesterday was an act of terrorism. If you doubt that, then imagine how Fox News would have covered the event if the shooter had been a Muslim. Or an immigrant. Or, for that matter, if he had been Black.

The Right says that we shouldn't talk about guns in the aftermath of something like yesterday's terrorist attack. Fine, if you don't want to talk about guns, then let's talk about domestic terrorism and who is behind it. Let's talk about who incites these attacks.

Let's talk about being responsible for your wake.

Moments of Thanks

Here's one of mine:

Five years after losing a portion of my right lung to cancer my oncologist sat me down, took my hand in his, looked me square in the eye and said, “My waiting room is for sick people. Get out of here!” Then he and his nurse gave me smiling hugs and waved good-bye as I floated out of the clinic.

Yours?

Black Friday observance

BLACK FRIDAY will find me indulging my usual celebration for that day:

(1) Wardrobe is limited to comfy jammies and fuzzy slippers.
(2) Dust off the turntable and stack the collection of Christmas vinyl.
(3) Unpack the vintage family ornaments.
(4) Decorate the tree while singing along to those old, scratchy records.
(5) Kick back, put my feet up, and sip some egg nog while watching a ridiculously goopy
holiday-themed movie.

Best bargain EVER, and no trampling required.
