The Vermont senator badly needs a surge of momentum as Arizona, Utah and Idaho vote.
By NICK GASS 03/22/16 06:54 PM EDT

A week after scoring a five-state rout against Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton has another chance Tuesday evening to widen her already daunting lead over the Vermont senator in the chase for the Democratic nomination.

As the contest shifts to the interior West, Arizona looms as the most critical primary of the night. Labor Secretary Tom Perez, who has been rumored to be a possible running mate for Clinton, campaigned on her behalf in the state, and former President Bill Clinton stumped in Phoenix over the weekend. Clinton's team has long downplayed expectations in the other two states voting on Tuesday, Utah and Idaho — both caucus states that favor Sanders.

Statesman, Boise press corps feel a certain Bern

Statesman, Boise press corps feel a certain Bern

Sanders team proposes, then withdraws, interview invitation

Candidate has no press interviews scheduled on Boise visit

BY BILL DENTZER

When I called Friday to confirm our appointment, the message back was, “Sorry, schedule change. No can do.”

Really? OK, but will the candidate make himself available to the press for questions? Ted Cruz did that when he passed through Boise two weeks ago. Marco Rubio didn’t.

No response from Team Sanders.

I called another staffer. No, as of now we don’t see any time for that, but we’ll let you know if something changes.

Right. Well, we won’t hold our breath.

Older Voters May Be Hillary Clinton’s Answer to Bernie Sanders’s Youth Appeal

Older Voters May Be Hillary Clinton’s Answer to Bernie Sanders’s Youth Appeal
By AMY CHOZICK MARCH 20, 2016

LAKE WORTH, Fla. — The afternoon of the Florida primaries last week, Sylvia Wolfson, 87, and more than a dozen other retirees scurried around an office set up with trays of cookies from Costco and large-print instructions on how to unlock the restroom door.

They were diligently calling voters to remind them to be at their polling locations no later than 7 p.m. and to be sure to vote for Hillary Clinton.

Mrs. Wolfson, who was volunteering for Mrs. Clinton, said she realized Senator Bernie Sanders had excited young people, but all of her friends and neighbors in her retirement community here were rooting for the former first lady and secretary of state.

Democrats to Sanders: Time to wind it down

Democrats to Sanders: Time to wind it down
Protracted combat with Hillary Clinton threatens to do real damage in a general election against Donald Trump, senators warn.
By BURGESS EVERETT 03/21/16 05:21 AM EDT

Democratic senators of all stripes are as impressed as they are surprised by Bernie Sanders’ insurgent campaign.

But the time has come, they say, for Sanders to start winding things down.

After holding their fire on Sanders for the better part of a year, the senators — all backers of Hillary Clinton — are gently calling on Sanders to face the reality that there’s almost no chance he’s going to be the Democratic nominee.

GOP leaders roll out 100-day strategy to derail Trump

GOP leaders roll out 100-day strategy to derail Trump

By Alexander Burns and Jonathan Martin NEW YORK TIMES MARCH 19, 2016

Republican leaders adamantly opposed to Donald Trump’s candidacy are preparing a 100-day campaign to deny him the presidential nomination, starting with an aggressive battle in Wisconsin’s April 5 primary and extending into the summer, with a delegate-by-delegate lobbying effort that would cast Trump as a calamitous choice for the general election.

Recognizing that Trump has seized a formidable advantage, they say that an effort to block him would rely on an array of desperation measures, the political equivalent of guerrilla war.

But should that effort falter, leading conservatives are prepared to field an independent candidate in the general election...

Sanders struggles to get back on track

Sanders struggles to get back on track
The Vermont senator's Western push was supposed to start with a win in Arizona next week. But he's still fighting the hangover from Tuesday's defeats.
By DANIEL STRAUSS 03/18/16 05:13 AM EDT

Bernie Sanders' Western push was supposed to start with a win next week in Arizona, a state where he's devoted serious advertising resources and drawn big crowds to his events.

But the shellacking he suffered Tuesday has cast a long shadow over his Arizona prospects, leading many Arizona Democrats to question whether the Vermont senator can get out from under it in time for his March 22 contest with Hillary Clinton.

Hispanic lawmaker rips Jane Sanders over Joe Arpaio meeting

Hispanic lawmaker rips Jane Sanders over Joe Arpaio meeting
By Harper Neidig

Bernie Sanders's wife, Jane Sanders, is facing heat for an impromptu meeting she had with Joe Arpaio, the controversial sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz.

Jane Sanders was touring the outside of Arpaio's "tent city" jail in Phoenix with immigration activists when the sheriff came and spoke with her briefly.

Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.), an outspoken advocate of immigrant rights and a supporter of Hillary Clinton, slammed Sanders for the meeting, saying she was not forceful enough with Arpaio.

"When Jane Sanders visited Joe Arpaio's inhumane detention center, the Sanders campaign had a chance to tell Arpaio to his face that he was wrong and that he needed to resign — as many of us have said for years. Instead, they heard him out, thanked him for his 'hospitality' and, contrary to their claims, made their criticisms through a press release and a series of tweets," Gutiérrez told Bloomberg.
