Bitter Primaries Undercut GOP Hopes In 3 States

It looks like this is a rare unslanted story from Yahoo News, and AP. In some races the Dems have a lot more money then the Pukes..

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Mutual admiration was the rule for Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson's listening session at the University of South Florida.

School provost Ralph Wilcox introduced the two-term senator as a "steadfast advocate for all Floridians." Nelson, a former astronaut, flattered the more than two dozen students present, saying they had a keen sense about people running for elected office. "You guys can usually smell out folks. You can spot a phony," he said.

Nelson collected their personal stories about the unbearable weight of student loans for a Senate speech days later on the need to keep the interest rate low. At the conclusion of the hour-plus session, he posed for photos with students.

Don't go looking for compliments and congeniality in the Republican primary to decide Nelson's election-year challenger. It's one of the meanest races in the country. George LeMieux calls rival Connie Mack a congressional no-show, claiming that the four-term House member spends more time in California with his wife, Rep. Mary Bono Mack, than either in Florida or on Capitol Hill. A devastating web video from LeMieux portrays Mack as Hollywood bad boy Charlie Sheen, highlighting years-old bar fights and Mack's previous experience as an events coordinator for Hooters.

Patrick Fitzgerald Resigns as U. S. Attorney

Source: Talking Points Memo

U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois Patrick J. Fitzgerald, one of the most high profile federal prosecutors in the country, is stepping down from his position after over a decade in the position. His resignation takes effect on June 30.

Fitzgerald, 51, has no future employment plans and will take the summer off before considering career options, his office said in a statement. He has been at the Justice Department for over 24 years and led the investigation into the leak of Valerie Plame’s status as a CIA agent and the prosecution of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

When I was selected for this position in 2001, I said that it was one of the greatest opportunities that one could ever hope for, and I believe that even more now after having the privilege of working alongside hundreds of dedicated prosecutors and agents,” Fitzgerald said in a statement. “I have tried not to get in their way. I extend my deepest appreciation to the attorneys and staff for their determined commitment to public service. This was a great office when I arrived, and I have no doubt that it will continue to be a great office.”

Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement that Fitzgerald had served with the “utmost integrity and a steadfast commitment to the cause of justice.”

2000 Convicted, Then Exonerated - Time U.S, Think Progress

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,2115334,00.html

WASHINGTON) — More than 2,000 people who were falsely convicted of serious crimes have been exonerated in the United States in the past 23 years, according to a new archive compiled at two universities.

There is no official record-keeping system for exonerations of convicted criminals in the country, so academics set one up. The new national registry, or database, painstakingly assembled by the University of Michigan Law School and the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law, is the most complete list of exonerations ever compiled.

The database compiled and analyzed by the researchers contains information on 873 exonerations for which they have the most detailed evidence. The researchers are aware of nearly 1,200 other exonerations, for which they have less data.

Rush Limbaugh's Ratings Drop in Several Big Markets.

Source: Huffington Post, Politico

The Huffington Post | By Jack Mirkinson Posted: 05/21/2012 9:33 am Updated: 05/21/2012 10:39 am

Rush Limbaugh's ratings have dropped sharply in several major markets following the firestorm over his comments about Sandra Fluke, Politico reports.

Limbaugh called Fluke a ;slut ;prostitute ; for her birth control advocacy, sparking condemnation from President Obama on down and causing many advertisers to flee his show. (One major radio CEO recently admitted that the controversy had cost him millions of dollars.)......................................
...................................................................................

On Monday, though, Politico's Dylan Byers got an early look at the latest ratings report from Arbitron:

The conservative radio host's ratings fell 27 percent in the key 25-54 demo in New York City, 31 percent in Houston-Galveston, 40 percent in Seattle-Tacoma, and 35 percent in Jacksonville, according to a selection of the March 29-April 25 Arbitron ratings provided by an industry source.

The story from Politico does say that there are large fluctuations in monthly ratings. So it is the over the long term that counts the most.
This is just the beginning, and we will know more in six months to a year.

Did Scott Walker Lie Under Oath to Congress? John Nichols, The Nation

Did Scott Walker Lie Under Oath to Congress?

John Nichols on May 14, 2012 - 1:55 PM ET

When Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker met with a billionaire campaign donor a month before he launched his attack on the collective-bargaining rights of public-sector workers and public-school teachers, he engaged in a detailed discussion about undermining unions as part of a broader strategy of strengthening the position of his Republican party.

After he initiated those attacks, Governor Walker testified under oath to a Congressional committee. He was asked during the April 2011 hearing to specifically address the question of whether he set out to weaken unions—which traditionally back Democrats and which are expected to play a major role in President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign—for political purposes. Walker replied: “It’s not about that for me.”

During the same hearing, Walker was asked whether he “ever had a conversation with respect to your actions in Wisconsin and using them to punish members of the opposition party and their [union] donor base?”

Walker replied, not once but twice, that the answer was “no.”

So, did the governor of Wisconsin lie, under oath, to Congress? The videotape of Walker talking with Diane Hendricks, the Beloit, Wisconsin, billionaire who would eventually give his campaign more than $500,000, surfaced late last week. Captured in January 2011 by a documentary filmmaker who was trailing Hendricks, the conversation provides rare insight into the governor’s long-term strategy for dividing Wisconsin. And the focus of the conversation and the strategy is by all evidence a political one.

When Global Foundries was seeking a home for its new $7 billion factory, it skipped over Germany and Singapore, where it already has facilities, and settled on the small town of Malta in upstate New York.

"We got a call from folks in New York who had been investing in infrastructure and workforce and everything," said Travis Bullard, a spokesman for the company, which is 100 percent owned by ATIC of Abu Dhabi. "We came up and looked at a few sites around New York and ultimately decided to build here."

Now the semiconductor-making site employs about 1,300 people, with plans to reach 1,600 by the end of the year

"These machines, our technicians, are doing extremely advanced manufacturing work," he said about the process of making silicon wafers. "They're manipulating individual atoms with the use of light and chemistry."

Global Foundries also has partnered with 17 community colleges and a high school to provide those looking for work or a new career path with the proper skills.
