TALLAHASSEE — Every year for nearly a decade, three names were added to the Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame, to honor those who've made significant contributions in the fight for equality and justice for all.

It's in state law: the Commission on Human Relations shall recommend up to 10 people for selection, and the governor shall select up to three of them. Their names and portraits are put up in a corner beside the Capitol entrance.

But that hasn't happened since 2019, Gov. Ron DeSantis' first year in office. Some Florida religious leaders, joined by local government and nonprofit officials, gathered on Thursday afternoon in front of the Civil Rights Hall of Fame, which is located neared the entrance of the Capitol building, and demanded to know why.

In addition to his $250,000 salary as Florida's Surgeon General, Ladapo receives $262,000 from the University of Florida. The article describes his duties and actual work for the university so far:

Ladapo’s contract at UF requires him to do research and clinical teaching, but the only documented research at UF is Institutional Review Board approval for a single study on reducing cardiovascular risk in HIV-infected adults, the university said in response to multiple public records requests.

When questioned about his job duties at UF, Ladapo told lawmakers on April 24 he has given academic talks and taught in two courses at the university – one on health policy and one on HIV. UF public records obtained by the Orlando Sentinel and South Florida Sun Sentinel indicate he gave a single guest lecture in each of those courses, which were taught by other professors.

He told lawmakers at the April 24 ethics committee meeting he has plans to teach in the future.

Florida has offered to send hundreds of law enforcement officers and national guard soldiers to Texas to help “defend the southern border,” Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office announced Tuesday, the same day that Texas Governor Greg Abbott released a letter to asking fellow governors to provide assistance at the border and absorb all of the costs.

The state is also offering equipment, including drones, aircraft, and boats.
