WNBA star Brittney Griner convicted in Russian court of drug-smuggling with criminal intent
Source: CNN
(CNN)American WNBA star Brittney Griner was convicted in a Russian court Thursday of smuggling drugs with criminal intent, amid concerns she is being used as a political pawn in Russia's war against Ukraine.
Griner could face up to 10 years in jail for the charge, and prosecutors asked for 9.5 years in closing arguments.
Prior to the verdict, Griner apologized to the court and asked for leniency in an emotional speech.
"I never meant to hurt anybody, I never meant to put in jeopardy the Russian population, I never meant to break any laws here," Griner said in the Khimki city courthouse. "I made an honest mistake and I hope that in your ruling that it doesn't end my life here. I know everybody keeps talking about political pawn and politics, but I hope that that is far from this courtroom.
"I want to say again that I had no intent on breaking any Russian laws. I had no intent. I did not conspire or plan to commit this crime," she added.

DOJ charges 4 current, former police officers in connection with raid that killed Breonna Taylor
Source: ABC
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Thursday that the Department of Justice has filed charges against four former and current Louisville police officers in connection with the death of Breonna Taylor. The charges include civil rights offenses, unlawful conspiracies, unconstitutional use of force and obstruction offenses.
"The federal charges announced today allege that members of a Police Investigations Unit falsified the affidavit used to obtain the search warrant of Ms. Taylor's home and that this act violated federal civil rights laws, and that those violations resulted in Ms. Taylor's death," Garland said in a news conference.
The federal charges against officer Joshua Jaynes, former Louisville detective Kelly Goodlett and officer Kyle Meany allege that they violated Taylor's 4th Amendment rights when they sought a warrant to search Taylor's home while knowing they lacked probable cause, and that they knew their affidavit supporting the contained false and misleading information and omitted other material information, resulting in her death. Goodlett and Jaynes have been charged with conspiracy for allegedly falsifying the affidavit for a search warrant, according to the justice department.
Prosecutors allege that Jaynes and Goodlett met in a garage after Taylor's death "where they agreed to tell investigators" looking into the botched raid "a false story."

The FBI arrested Joshua Jaynes on Thursday morning and charged him with federal civil rights violations.
The FBI has arrested and charged Joshua Jaynes, the former Louisville Metro Police Department detective who lied on the search warrant application that let officers raid Breonna Taylor's home. The disastrous "no-knock" warrant in March 2020 ended up with Taylor dead.
WAVE3 reported that Jaynes was arrested early Thursday morning and is charged with federal civil rights violations.
Jaynes wrote in the search warrant that he "verified with a U.S. Postal Inspector" that Taylor's ex, whom police suspected of dealing drugs, had been receiving mail at her address. However, an internal investigation found that Jaynes had not verified the information with a postal worker himself, but rather relied on another officer's false word.
In fact, the officer with whom Jaynes spoke, Jonathan Mattingly, was not in contact with a postal inspector either. Mattingly only ever got the information from a different police department. The investigation found not only that Jaynes lied about his verification efforts, but that there were never any relevant packages arriving at Taylor's home.

Biden signs executive order to support travel for abortions in latest move aimed at protecting acces
Source: CBS
Washington President Biden signed an executive order Wednesday aimed at making it easier to travel to obtain an abortion and enforcing federal non-discrimination laws for those seeking the procedure, his latest unilateral effort to secure abortion rights in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision to strike down Roe v. Wade.
The order directs Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra to consider actions to support patients traveling out of state for abortions, including through the use of waivers that would allow states where abortion is legal to cover the cost of the procedure under Medicaid for out-of-state residents. It also directs the secretary to make sure health care providers comply with federal non-discrimination laws, and asks him to evaluate and improve research and analysis on maternal health outcomes.
"Secretary Becerra is going to work with states through Medicaid to allow them to provide reproductive health care for women who live in states where abortions are being banned in that state," Mr. Biden said Wednesday. "The executive order makes sure health care providers comply with federal law so women don't face delays or denials of medically necessary care. And this executive order advances research and data collection to evaluate the impact that this reproductive health crisis is having on maternal health and other health conditions and health outcomes."
The president signed the executive action during a virtual appearance at the first meeting of his newly created Task Force on Reproductive Healthcare Access. Mr. Biden is still recovering from a "rebound" case of COVID-19 and in isolation at the White House. After signing the order, Mr. Biden said much work remains to ensure abortion access, but he's confident Vice President Kamala Harris can get it done.

If Thanedar's claim holds as expected, it will almost certainly mean that Detroit, which has the largest Black majority of any major city in the U.S., will not have a Black representative in Congress for the first time since 1955. The Associated Press, which the Free Press uses to help call races, had not yet declared a winner as of 9 a.m.
The Wayne County Clerk's office, however. reported as of 8:30 a.m. that all 430 precincts in the district had reported, a number the AP said accounted for more than two-thirds of the total vote. Thanedar, of Detroit, an Indian immigrant and entrepreneur who poured millions of his own money into the race, led with led with 28%, compared to 23% for Hollier and 17% for Focus: HOPE CEO Portia Roberson in the newly drawn 13th Congressional District.
Thanedar led Hollier by about 3,800 votes, 22,302 to 18,513 and was well ahead of the other candidates in the nine-person field. If his win is finalized, he will face Republican Martell Bivings, who has worked as a liaison with the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, but in this solidly Democratic-leaning district, Thanedar is considered almost certain to win.
