Any current-retired pilots here who can comment on this?
Foreign Airlines to ( MUST) Use GPS for San Francisco Landings
Non-U.S. carriers landing at San Francisco International Airport, where a plane flown by South Koreas Asiana Airlines Inc. (020560), plowed into a seawall, must use global-positioning systems when landing, regulators said.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued the requirement and cited an increase in the number of aborted landing approaches since the July 6 crash of Asiana Flight 214, which killed three people. Jets executing the maneuver included one from Taiwans Eva Airways Corp. (2618), the FAA said yesterday.
The FAA has done a good thing here, said John Nance, an aviation safety consultant and a former commercial pilot.
Theyve got enough of our tower operators that can tell you when you assign a visual approach to these pilots from foreign carriers, theyre all over the sky.
The increase in aborted landings, which are known as go-arounds, involved foreign airlines flying visual approaches, the FAA said in an e-mailed statement.

Anyone ever heard of the Moken? Neither did I, till now.
The Moken: Gypsies of the SeaThey roam the sea most of their lives, living in handcrafted boats and diving for food into depths of 75 feet without scuba gear or masks.
They're so familiar with the seas they've lived on for hundreds of years, that researchers found that their children have underwater vision twice as sharp as their European counterparts, according to National Geographic.
They're so aware of the sea that they knew that the devastating 2004 tsunami was coming and were able to emerge from the disaster unscathed, according to the New York Times.
Among the cultures of the world, the Moken of Myanmar and Thailand are one of the least touched by modern civilization, and one of the most fascinating.

Jury awards Oregon woman $18.6M over credit report
A win for the victim over credit company.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- A federal jury in Oregon awarded $18.6 million to a woman who spent two years unsuccessfully trying to get Equifax Information Services to fix major mistakes on her credit report.
Julie Miller of Marion County was awarded $18.4 million in punitive damages and $180,000 in compensatory damages, though Friday's award against one of the nation's major credit bureaus is likely to be appealed, The Oregonian reported ( http://is.gd/VYkiIs ).
The jury was told she contacted Equifax eight times between 2009 and 2011 in an effort to correct inaccuracies, including erroneous accounts and collection attempts, as well as a wrong Social Security number and birthday. Her lawsuit alleged the Atlanta-based company failed to correct the mistakes.
"There was damage to her reputation, a breach of her privacy and the lost opportunity to seek credit," said Justin Baxter, a Portland attorney who worked on the case with his father and law partner, Michael Baxter. "She has a brother who is disabled and who can't get credit on his own, and she wasn't able to help him."

4.
or..... any of these..esp. the last one:
Make White House Communications Public: Obama will amend executive orders to ensure that communications about regulatory policymaking between persons outside government and all White House staff are disclosed to the public.
Conduct Regulatory Agency Business in Public: Obama will require his appointees who lead the executive branch departments and rulemaking agencies to conduct the significant business of the agency in public, so that any citizen can see these debates in person or watch them on the internet.
and esp. THIS....not sure how it is working out:
Protect Whistleblowers: Often the best source of information about waste, fraud, and abuse in government is an existing government employee committed to public integrity and willing to speak out. Such acts of courage and patriotism, which can sometimes save lives and often save taxpayer dollars, should be encouraged rather than stifled. We need to empower federal employees as watchdogs of wrongdoing and partners in performance.
Barack Obama will strengthen whistleblower laws to protect federal workers who expose waste, fraud, and abuse of authority in government. Obama will ensure that federal agencies expedite the process for reviewing whistleblower claims and whistleblowers have full access to courts and due process.
anyone know??
Need help in locating a few campaign promises....
The pre-election campaign made promises that Pres. Obama and VP Biden would carry out.
But I can't find the results.
Here are a couple:
1.End the Practice of Writing Legislation Behind Closed Doors:
As president, Barack Obama will restore the American people's trust in their government by making government more open and transparent. Obama will work to reform congressional rules to require all legislative sessions, including committee mark-ups and conference committees, to be conducted in public.
anyone know of any legislation about this?

2.Create a Public "Contracts and Influence" Database:
As president, Obama will create a "contracts and influence" database that will disclose how much federal contractors spend on lobbying, and what contracts they are getting and how well they complete them.
Any hints on how to find that database?

3.End Abuse of No-Bid Contracts:
Barack Obama and Joe Biden will end abuse of no-bid contracts by requiring that nearly all contract orders over $25,000 be competitively awarded.
..I have had no luck in tracking this down.

4.
Shine Light on Earmarks and Pork Barrel Spending: Obama's Transparency and Integrity in Earmarks Act will shed light on all earmarks by disclosing the name of the legislator who asked for each earmark, along with a written justification, 72 hours before they can be approved by the full Senate.

Now I don't feel bad about being the shortest one in the family.
Altho...only one relative died of cancer ( smoking and drinking a LOT)
Study finds link between women’s height and cancer risk
Among nearly 145,000 women between the ages of 50 and 79, researchers found that height was more strongly associated with cancer than such established risk factors as obesity.
The association held true for everything from thyroid cancer to melanoma, researchers reported in the latest issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
Dr. Walter Willett, chair of the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, said the study should not raise alarm for the tall, though it does provide additional evidence that greater height is associated with cancer.
The increase in risk is modest and is balanced by a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in taller people, so there is no reason for those of us who are tall to panic, Willett, who was not involved in the study, said in an email. Most importantly, research to understand the reason for the extra risk in taller people may lead us to new ways to prevent or treat cancer.

55-gallon drum of depleted uranium found at Miami airport
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue evacuated a 150-foot perimeter to assess the hazard, spokesman Arnold Piedrahita tweeted.
Officials at Opa-locka airport said there were depleted uranium parts in a container, located outside a DC-10 aircraft, that was sealed and became unsealed. It is unclear how the container became unsealed.
The aircraft was slated for demolition but had not yet been set off.

KTVU producers fired over Asiana pilots' fake names
KTVU-TV has dismissed at least three veteran producers over the on-air gaffe involving the fake names of those Asiana airline pilots that became an instant YouTube hit - and a major embarrassment to the station.
Station sources confirmed late Wednesday that investigative producer Roland DeWolk, special projects producer Cristina Gastelu and producer Brad Belstock were all sent packing following an in-house investigation into the July 12 broadcast of four fake names of the pilots involved in the Asiana Flight 214 crash at San Francisco International Airport on July 6.
A fourth - noon news producer Elvin Sledge - told colleagues he was leaving for health reasons.
