Good info about WA COVID-19 death - it was a man in his 50's, not a woman

Helen Branswell ✔@HelenBranswell

1. Turning this into a thread.

Helen Branswell ✔@HelenBranswell

Washington State announced an awful trifecta today: The 1st US #Covid19 death, the 1st case in a health worker & the 1st outbreak in a long-term care facility.
The death was not there, though.
And the person who died was a man. Not a woman.

2. The Washington State situation is very concerning. The long-term facility has 108 residents and around 180 staff. 27 of the residents & 25 of the staff are reporting having some symptoms; they are being tested, said @DocJeffD said.

3. The new cases today in Washington State — 3 — are in addition to 2 reported yesterday. 1 of yesterday's was a case of community spread, as were today's.
Washington just started testing.
If they've found 4 and have had 1 death, there are more.

4. The person who died in Washington State — the first confirmed #Covid19 death in the US — was a man in his 50s.
Man. Male. He/him/his.

First Covid-19 outbreak in a U.S. nursing home raises concerns

By ERIC BOODMAN @ericboodman and HELEN BRANSWELL @HelenBranswell

FEBRUARY 29, 2020

Washington state reported on Saturday the first death in the U.S. from the new coronavirus, the first health care worker to be infected with the disease, and most worrying, the first known outbreak in a long-term care facility.

At a nursing facility in Kirkland, Wash, approximately 27 of the 108 residents and 25 of the 180 staff have some symptoms, health officials said during a teleconference with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Authorities report that some among them have pneumonia.

“We are very concerned about an outbreak in a setting where there are many older people, as we would be wherever people who are susceptible might be gathering,” said Jeff Duchin, health officer for public health for Seattle and King County. He added that older adults and people with underlying health conditions like diabetes, heart or lung disease should be especially careful to protect themselves by washing their hands, not touching their faces, and avoiding contact with people who are sick.

The deceased, a man in his 50s with underlying health conditions, was not a resident of the facility, and officials have not yet found a link between his case and the outbreak in the nursing facility.

Republican mega-donor buys stake in Twitter and seeks to oust Jack Dorsey - report

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/feb/29/paul-singer-elliott-management-twitter-jack-dorsey

Billionaire Paul Singer’s Elliott Management has taken a ‘sizable stake’ and intends to ‘push for changes’, reports Bloomberg News

A major Republican donor has purchased a stake in Twitter and is reportedly seeking to oust its chief executive, Jack Dorsey.

Bloomberg News first reported that Elliott Management has taken a “sizable stake” and “and plans to push for changes at the social media company, including replacing Dorsey”.

Paul Singer, the billionaire founder of Elliott Management, is a Republican mega-donor who opposed Donald Trump during the real-estate magnate’s run for the presidential nomination but has since come onside.

After a White House visit in February 2017, Trump said Singer “was very much involved with the anti-Trump or, as they say, ‘Never Trump’, and Paul just left, and he’s given us his total support and it’s all about unification”.

Kurt Eichenwald: Govt's initial response to Spanish Flu in 1918 parallels Trump admin's response 👀

Kurt Eichenwald ✔@kurteichenwald

1. In 2017, Smithsonian Mag ran a fascinating article about the the 1918 flu that killed more than WW1 & WW2 combined. The piece was about how the flu spread across USA and killed so many people.

Key takeaways: Government lying played a huge role....

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/journal-plague-year-180965222/

2....when you read what government officials said in the buildup, as the disease was spreading in only a couple of locations in two states, it sounds shockingly similar to what the Trump Admin is saying now. Examples....

3...(again, these words were said by government officials as the 1918 flu was spreading. These are not Trump Admin words, even though they sound almost identical.)

We have "“confine this disease to its present limits, and in this we are sure to be successful."....

4... "No fatalities have been recorded. No concern whatever is felt.”

We will "nip the epidemic in the bud.”

"“There is no cause for alarm if precautions are observed.”

"If ordinary precautions are observed there is no cause for alarm.”....

5... (an ode to Limbaugh, who said coronavirus was just a cold.) “Spanish influenza is plain la grippe—same old fever and chills.”

Because the fears of the disease were a "hoax" (kidding, thats Trump's words) a big parade was not canceled. Many people got infected there...

6... Which goes to the problem. Trump tells his followers that concern about the disease is "a hoax." Other members of the Admin say it is simply people trying to "bring down Trump." This constant refrain of "it's not real" is leading to Trumpers declaring it is false....

7...and spreading conspiracy theories. This is a public health crisis. It is not about politics. It can explode into a disaster, or it can be defeated with smart public policy. But telling people it isn't a real problem means that they will not take reasonable precautions...

8...this means the reality that everyone must wash their hands multiple times a day, not shake hands, stay home if they don't need to go out, telecommute as much as you can, etc etc, will be ignored. Why take precautions for a disease that is just a cold, no big deal, a hoax?...

9...that was why so many people went to the Liberty Day Parade in Philadelphia, because the government said "meh" in the face of experts saying "STOP!" The infections from that event were mammoth....

10...the 1918 flu had a 2-3 day incubation period. That meant, whatever the number of people infected on Monday would show up on Wednesday or Thursday. For those two days, they would spread it if they didn't believe it was real.

Coronavirus is 14 days. That means the number....

11...of people infected TODAY will not be known until mid-March. Worse, government bumbling has left us with only a handful of counties having testing kits. That means we don't even know how many people were infected in mid-February. All of those people have been walking around..

12...I am not saying this is the next 1918 flu. I am not saying this is the "big one" or global pandemics, or that it will grow to historic significance at all. What I *AM* saying is that this constant refrain of "it's no problem" is potentially deadly.

13....bottom line, the Trump Admin treats this as a PR problem. It's not. It's not time to panic, but it IS time to take precautions (hands, stay home when you can, etc). Corona might not explode. But our government is making things worse by lying. Get your info from @WHO.

LOS ANGELES — The man who created Trader Joe’s markets with a vision that college-educated but poorly paid young people would buy healthy foods if they could only afford them has died.

Joe Coulombe's family says he died Friday at age 89.

He opened the first of his quirky, nautically themed markets in Pasadena, California, in 1967. He stocked it with granola, organic foods and other items he bought directly from suppliers to hold prices down. The store was run by people who were described as “traders on the high seas.”

The first store is still operating and it's in its original location.

Cross gently, Joe.

Trump wins appeal to block McGahn testimony

Source: Politico

By DARREN SAMUELSOHN and JOSH GERSTEIN

Updated: 02/28/2020 05:35 PM EST

President Donald Trump scored a major legal victory on Friday when a federal appeals court panel ruled Democrats have no right to hear testimony from former White House counsel Don McGahn.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit’s opinion overturned a lower court decision requiring McGahn’s testimony and told the judge presiding over the case to dismiss it outright. The ruling is a blow to House Democrats’ attempts to break the Trump administration’s intransigent stance that it can block Congress from talking to witnesses. McGahn was a key source of information for Robert Mueller and Democrats have been angling to secure an interview to find out what he told the special counsel.

The 2-1 ruling comes a little more than three weeks after Trump was acquitted in the Senate on largely unrelated impeachment charges involving his posture toward Ukraine. It’s also not necessarily final. Democrats are expected to appeal, and the case could face a fast-track Supreme Court review.

The opinion, written by GOP appointee Thomas Griffith, goes to the heart of long-running battles over the power balance between Congress and the White House that have played out during Trump’s tenure.

The Hardball anchor frequently demeans women guests, with objectifying and belittling comments, both on and off air.

BY LAURA BASSETT

Chris Matthews has a history of off colored remarks towards women.

<snip>

In 2017, I wrote a personal essay about a much older, married cable news host who inappropriately flirted with me in the makeup room a few times before we went live on his show, making me noticeably uncomfortable on air. I was afraid to name him at the time for fear of retaliation from the network; I’m not anymore. It was Chris Matthews. In 2016, right before I had to go on his show and talk about sexual assault allegations against Donald Trump, Matthews looked over at me in the makeup chair next to him and said, “Why haven’t I fallen in love with you yet?”

When I laughed nervously and said nothing, he followed up to the makeup artist. “Keep putting makeup on her, I’ll fall in love with her.”

Another time, he stood between me and the mirror and complimented the red dress I was wearing for the segment. “You going out tonight?” he asked.

I said I didn’t know, and he said—again to the makeup artist—“Make sure you wipe this off her face after the show. We don’t make her up so some guy at a bar can look at her like this.”

</snip>

He's been under fire all week for comparing one Dem candidate's rise to the Nazi invasion of Poland, plus The Daily Show put together a creepy video of him leering at different women through the years.
