CO-SEN: Hickenlooper announces $3.7M raised in pre-primary reporting period

Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) announced Thursday he had raised $3.7 million for his Senate campaign between April 1 and June 10.

The Hickenlooper campaign said the haul is the most raised for a Colorado Senate candidate during the pre-primary period.

“I am thankful for the support of our grassroots army during these difficult times,” Hickenlooper said in a statement.

The campaign said the average contribution during this period was $24.

“Republicans have already started spending millions of dollars to attack me in their attempt to save Senator Cory Gardner. But Mitch McConnell’s ads can’t change the facts: Senator Gardner has sided with Trump 100% of the time and failed to be the independent voice he promised Coloradans he’d be,” Hickenlooper added. “This pandemic has underscored the need for change in a broken Washington, and I aim to bring that change.”

Man allegedly murdered woman after she told him she was transgender

An 18-year-old high school student was allegedly so upset after finding out a woman he went home with was transgender that he killed her.

Even after firing his gun twice at Selena Reyes-Hernandez, Orlando Perez confessed to detectives that he went back to Reyes-Hernandez’s Marquette Park residence a second time so he could shoot her lifeless body again, Cook County prosecutors said Tuesday.

Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office identified Reyes-Hernandez by her birth name, but prosecutors said she preferred to go by the first name of Selena.

Although they lived blocks apart, there was no indication Perez and 37-year-old Reyes-Hernandez knew each other before they were seen on video surveillance returning to Reyes-Hernandez’s home together around 5:30 a.m. on May 31, prosecutors said.

Perez allegedly told detectives during a video-recorded statement that while inside, he asked Reyes-Hernandez if she was a girl. When she said she was trans, he told her he had to leave.

Surveillance cameras show Perez leaving 20 minutes later, and then returning around 6 a.m. with a dark face covering, prosecutors said. The video allegedly shows Perez take out a handgun and rack the slide as he approaches Reyes-Hernandez’s home in the 3300 block of West 71st Street.

Ricketts tells local governments they won't get federal COVID-19 money if they require masks

LINCOLN — At his regular coronavirus press conferences, Gov. Pete Ricketts makes a point of urging Nebraskans to wear a mask when they go to a store.

But when it comes to the state’s 93 courthouses and other local government offices, he doesn’t want local officials to require masks. In fact, he’s told local governments that they won’t receive any of the $100 million in federal COVID-19 money if their “customers” are required to wear masks.

“The governor encourages people to wear a mask,” according to his spokesman Taylor Gage, “but does not believe that failure to wear a mask should be the basis for denying taxpayers’ services.”

The no-mask mandate has been poorly received in some corners of the state, with officials criticizing the loss of local control. It also runs counter to the advice of public health officials, who have stressed the importance of wearing masks.

NY-17: Human Rights Campaign endorses Mondaire Jones in race to replace Nita Lowey in NY

he Human Rights Campaign on Thursday endorsed progressive Mondaire Jones in the race to replace retiring Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.) in New York's 17th District.

Jones, who would be the first black openly LGBTQ member of Congress if elected, is facing off against seven other Democrats ahead of the primary next week.

“Mondaire Jones has used his life to make our nation a more equal and just place. Today, we’re proud to endorse him to bring his voice to the halls of Congress,” Human Rights Campaign President Alphonso David said in a statement first obtained by The Hill.

The endorsement comes as members of the LGBTQ community and supporters celebrate Pride Month, touting a Supreme Court ruling on Monday that gay and transgender people are protected against employment discrimination under existing civil rights laws.

It also comes as the U.S. grapples with the issue of racial justice following the police killings of unarmed black people including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Rayshard Brooks.
