Study documents that some children lose autism diagnosis
Small group with confirmed autism now on par with mainstream peers -- NIH-funded study

Some children who are accurately diagnosed in early childhood with autism lose the symptoms and the diagnosis as they grow older, a study supported by the National Institutes of Health has confirmed. The research team made the finding by carefully documenting a prior diagnosis of autism in a small group of school-age children and young adults with no current symptoms of the disorder.

The report is the first of a series that will probe more deeply into the nature of the change in these children's status. Having been diagnosed at one time with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), these young people now appear to be on par with typically developing peers. The study team is continuing to analyze data on changes in brain function in these children and whether they have subtle residual social deficits. The team is also reviewing records on the types of interventions the children received, and to what extent they may have played a role in the transition.

"Although the diagnosis of autism is not usually lost over time, the findings suggest that there is a very wide range of possible outcomes," said NIMH Director Thomas R. Insel, M.D. "For an individual child, the outcome may be knowable only with time and after some years of intervention. Subsequent reports from this study should tell us more about the nature of autism and the role of therapy and other factors in the long term outcome for these children."

The study, led by Deborah Fein, Ph.D., at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, recruited 34 optimal outcome children, who had received a diagnosis of autism in early life and were now reportedly functioning no differently than their mainstream peers. For comparison, the 34 children were matched by age, sex, and nonverbal IQ with 44 children with high-functioning autism, and 34 typically developing peers. Participants ranged in age from 8 to 21 years old.

Interscope Records and Beats Electronics founder Jimmy Iovine received an honorary degree from the University of Southern California during the school's Friday graduation ceremony, where he also delivered a speech and brought out surprise guest Dr. Dre.

To all the proud parents here today, just one year ago, I sat all the way in back, I mean the last row, watching my own daughter Jessica graduate from USC. Look, if they asked me to do this, you better pay attention because next year they could ask you.

To all of today’s graduates, I can’t imagine what’s going through your minds right now. I never had the opportunity to go to a great university like this. I didn’t get here today like you did — by studying hard and excelling in school. Yet here I stand before you at this amazing crossroads in your life. So the question of the hour is what can I teach you? How can I help you even in the slightest way to be ready for whatever comes next?

So I asked myself, how did I get here? After a lot of thought, I realized there have been two life lessons that changed everything about me. These were moments that shook me, scared me and humbled me. In the end, these moments are two big reasons I am here today. And since my education came in the music business, you may recognize some of the names and think, how can this guy’s stories possibly apply to me? Yet I truly believe these two experiences apply to absolutely anyone and anything you want to do in this journey called life.

Grassroots Initiative Tackles New Childhood Epidemics

One of the greatest paradoxes of our times is that the most affluent, resourced and medically advanced societies in the world also have the highest rates of chronic childhood illness. Obesity and diabetes, autism and neurodevelopmental delays, and digestive and allergic diseases were rare just a generation ago. Today those illnesses are impacting our children in epidemic numbers, and the social, economic and human costs are staggering. Our children are the “canaries in the coal mine” of national health. For their sakes, we must take action now.

“The Fierce Urgency of Now”

Some startling statistics:

* Rates of autism have risen over the last few decades from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 50 children. Autism costs the United States $126 billion per year.
* Asthma affects 1 in 8 children, and as many as 1 in 6 African American children. Asthma costs the United States $56 billion per year.
* One in 3 American children is either overweight or obese. Obesity-related medical costs account for $190 billion, or 21 percent of medical spending in the United States; childhood obesity carries a price tag of $14 billion a year in direct medical costs.
* One in 30 children is diagnosed with pediatric depression. The United States spends $83 billion a year on depression.
* Approximately 10 percent of American children have ADD/ADHD, and some 17 percent are labeled “learning disabled.” ADHD is estimated to cost the United States upwards of $100 billion per year.

There is a “fierce urgency of now” to take swift action to address this epidemic.

The Canary Kids Project

The Canary Kids Project (CKP) is an innovative, not-for-profit project aimed at identifying and addressing the individual issues at the root of this epidemic. The project tests and documents an integrative, results-oriented model of health care that takes a look upstream at the causes of chronic illness, rather than downstream at the symptoms.

There is a great deal of anecdotal evidence indicating that individuals with chronic conditions, even autism, can fully recover. The Canary Kids Project seeks to test and explore, through proper and rigorous scientific methodology, the underpinnings of these anecdotal successes.

I've worked with hundreds of doctors. If you think any one of them has ever considered a "kickback," you're a bloody fool who knows nothing about health care. Oh, wait.

NIMH Director Rethinks Standard Psychiatric Treatment for Schizophrenia

The director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) now recognizes what treatment reform activists have been talking about for years: People diagnosed with schizophrenia and other psychoses are a diverse group who need diverse approaches. NIMH director Thomas Insel recently acknowledged:

It appears that what we currently call "schizophrenia" may comprise disorders with quite different trajectories. For some people, remaining on medication long-term might impede a full return to wellness. For others, discontinuing medication can be disastrous.

NIMH director Insel now agrees with treatment reform activists that many people diagnosed with schizophrenia and other psychoses could be better served by a more selective and limited use of drugs and more diverse treatments. Such an approach has been utilized in Finland, which has produced the best long-term outcomes in the developed world.

Drug companies have profited enormously from the current standard treatment protocol that calls for lifetime antipsychotic medication after a single psychotic episode. Because of this treatment protocol and the increasing use of antipsychotic drugs for nonpsychotic conditions, antipsychotics grossed over $18 billion a year in the United States by 2011. The antipsychotic Abilify became the highest grossing of all drugs in the first quarter of 2013, and it is on track to gross $6 billion this year (entire corporations that only grossed approximately $5 billion last year include Facebook and Yahoo).

For several decades, mental health treatment reform activists, comprised of mental health professionals (including those at the International Society for Ethical Psychology and Psychiatry) and "psychiatric survivors" (who themselves had received nonproductive and counterproductive treatments), have been engaged in an uphill battle for truly informed choice -- that includes multiple options which reflect the diversity of the population diagnosed with schizophrenia and other psychoses.
