Making Republicans pay a price for climate science denialism

The League of Conservation Voters is engaged in an interesting experiment designed to answer that question, running ads targeting GOP Senator Ron Johnson and a handful of House GOP lawmakers over their climate denialism.
The group’s operating theory: Denying what science says about threats to the fate of the planet should perhaps be, you know, a tiny bit politically problematic. GOP lawmakers pay a steep price for outsized claims about abortion or immigration. Why not about something as consequential as climate change?
Now the group has done a new poll that, it says, underscores that drawing attention to a public official’s climate science denialism does erode his or her public image. The group’s polling memo is right here. The group polled on Senator Johnson in the Green Bay, WI, media market — a swing area where its ads ran — before and after the ad buy. According to the memo:
The memo also reports a 14-point increase in those who feel less favorable towards Johnson based on what they have heard about him; an eight point increase in his job disapproval; and an eight point boost in in constituents believing Johnson is out of step on climate change. 52 percent of constituents who definitely recall the ads volunteer unfavorable impressions of Ron Johnson and his record in an open-ended (unprompted) question format, and most of the concerns they express relate directly to the content of the ads.
The memo also reports a 14-point increase in those who feel less favorable towards Johnson based on what they have heard about him; an eight point increase in his job disapproval; and an eight point boost in in constituents believing Johnson is out of step on climate change. North Carolina Prosecutor Takes Shots at the Laws He’s Obliged to Enforce

But the author of that scathing assessment in The Huffington Post last week was the North Carolina attorney general, Roy Cooper, a Democrat and the man whose job it is to enforce those laws, including the voting changes that have already become the subject of a federal lawsuit.
His remarks brought a sharp rebuke from Gov. Pat McCrory and accusations from Republicans that Mr. Cooper is letting his ambition — he is widely expected to run against Mr. McCrory, a Republican, in 2016 — get in the way of his duties as attorney general.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker Rejects Medicaid Expansion
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) announced Wednesday that he would be rejecting a Medicaid expansion under President Obama's health reform law, known as Obamacare, for a plan of his own. Per the Wisconsin State Journal:
Walker said his plan would reduce the number of uninsured by 224,580 people, but said he would do so by moving people into private exchanges rather than Medicaid.
"My goal, I want to have fewer people in the state who are uninsured," Walker said. "And I want to have fewer people in this state who are dependent on government."

Governor Scott Walker has done it again. He has made national news, made a splash -- and certainly established his bona fide conservative credentials once more. But his actions come at a great cost for Wisconsin's low-income families and individuals.
Most Wisconsinites are aware that Wisconsin, under the leadership of Governor Walker, has decided to turn down mind-boggling levels of federal funding available for expanding access to BadgerCare (Wisconsin's Medicaid program). But many are unaware of the flipside of Walker's plans for BadgerCare: the governor and his co-conspirators have added insult to injury by cutting more people from Medicaid than any other state in the nation.
Now, in full disclosure: I'm a Democrat and a supporter of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). But I'm also a Wisconsinite, through and through. I know a couple of things about my fellow Wisconsinites. First, we're willing to lend one another a hand when a neighbor is in need -- or lacks something as basic as health care. Second, we expect our elected leaders to pass budgets that meet basic standards of fiscal common sense. Unfortunately, the governor has made the baffling decision to cover fewer people at a greater cost to our state.
In sum -- the governor has decided that rather than expanding eligibility under BadgerCare to all adults under 133 percent of the federal poverty line, and receiving full federal support, he will instead be making major changes to the program and eliminating BadgerCare coverage for thousands and thousands of people. Under the governor's plan, the current income eligibility level for parents and caregivers will be sliced in half, while childless adults below the poverty line will gain access to coverage. This means that approximately 90,000 Wisconsinites will be losing their existing Medicaid coverage.

I wanted to give you all a heads up about what I’m hearing from “the opposition” in regards to the proposed non-discrimination ordinance.
The City Council President sent out an e-mail yesterday to the City Manager and Chief of Police requesting additional police presence in the Legislative Chambers on November 13th for the meeting where we will discuss this ordinance stating that he expected an organized effort to fill the legislative chambers in opposition to the proposed changes.
If you are not able to make it to the actual meeting, please take a moment to send an e-mail to the city council expressing your support for the proposed ordinance. If you can come on November 13th, I would encourage you to arrive early to make sure you are able to get into the legislative chambers and get a seat. The meeting starts at 6pm.

When Fond du Lac City Council member Dan Manning told me that he was going to propose "adding language designed to protect transgender people from housing discrimination" in Fond du Lac, I was simultaneously shocked and proud.
Bold leaders like Dan and other Fond du Lac City Council members who support this ordinance are helping push the community to become more inclusive of all types of people. However, there are City Council members who may not support this ordinance Dan told me last night.
That is why I am writing you from my new home in Minneapolis. As a fighter, I know that you don't give up either and have a few minutes to write an email to a council member.
Will you write to a Fond du Lac City Council member and tell him/her to support the anti-discrimination proposal?
City Council members often count how many emails they receive on an issue and from time to time, mention the number of contacts they receive on issues at council meetings.
City Council members like Karyn Merkle and Lee Ann Lorrigan could vote against the proposal while Catherine Block and Gary Miller will most likely support it.
