American Values

"Military men are just dumb stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy." ~ Henry Kissinger

"I relied on his counsel when I served as secretary of state. He checked in with me regularly, sharing astute observations about foreign leaders and sending me written reports on his travels." She does add that she and Henry "have often seen the world and some of our challenges quite differently, and advocated different responses now and in the past." But here's the kicker: At the end of the review, she notes that Kissinger is "surprisingly idealistic":

Even when there are tensions between our values and other objectives, America, he reminds us, succeeds by standing up for our values, not shirking them, and leads by engaging peoples and societies, the sources of legitimacy, not governments alone.

...

She knows what Kissinger has done. She knows what Kissinger represents. There's none of that in her self-serving review. Instead, she hails him as a champion of a values-driven foreign policy. Maybe when he's typing in front of a computer these days—but not when he wielded power. Clinton lets him off the hook and participates in the long-running pretense that Kissinger is a grand old statesman who deserves respect rather than scorn.

Wisconsin sturgeon spearing season ends with 6th largest harvest on record

http://www.jsonline.com/sports/outdoors/wisconsin-sturgeon-spearing-season-ends-with-6th-largest-harvest-on-record-b99449581z1-293449931.html

"It was one of those dream shots," Cherney said in a phone interview Sunday afternoon. "It was right in the middle of the hole. Couldn't miss it even if you wanted to." Cherney didn't want to miss it.

And it turned out Cherney's quarry was a record. At 81.3 inches and 137.5 pounds, the sturgeon speared by Cherney was the largest hauled in this season.

...

The sturgeon season lasted eight days and Saturday was picked as the ending date after anglers approached the cap of 878 adult female sturgeon on Friday. The season ended with 911 adult female sturgeon speared.

Lake Winnebago is home to the largest native population of lake sturgeon in the world.

The Progressive: Malcolm X as Relevant Today as 50 Years Ago

http://www.progressive.org/news/2015/02/188012/malcolm-x-relevant-today-50-years-ago

He was born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Neb. He was raised mostly in Lansing, Michigan, where his father, Earl, an outspoken follower of the black self-determination proponent Marcus Garvey, was killed, allegedly by white supremacists. Earl’s death devastated the Little family and eventually led young Malcolm, an exceptional grade school student, to drift into a life of petty crime and drug abuse.

Malcolm went to prison in Massachusetts some years later. It was here where he found himself and his voice when he converted to the religion and worldview of Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam.

...

In a May 1964 speech, he talked about police brutality in black communities. “A black man in America lives in a police state,” he said. “He doesn’t live in any democracy. He lives in a police state.”

In February 1965, Malcolm X again responded in a speech in Detroit to the problem of police brutality. This time, he noted the role of the media. “The press is used to make it look like (the black man) is the criminal and (the police force is) the victim,” he stated.

WISCONSIN: “Expect calls for a General Strike Tuesday”

http://www.bluecheddar.net/?p=41845

The following comes from the post “GENERAL STRIKE” at The Devil’s Advocates Radio Network – Wisconsin:

Madison-A unanimous vote of three represented labor unions and other assembled activists (at a hastily called luncheon #crute was invited to attend) to support a #GeneralStrike .

A General Strike was the only unifying strategy discussed to block Right-to-Work #RTW, $300 UW System cuts, $127 K-12 cuts, killing the Kenosha casino and 10,000 jobs, failure to expand Medicaid, and cuts to Senior-care and disability programs. Expect calls for a General Strike Tuesday when the AFL-CIO rallies opposition to the Republican fast-tracking of #RTW Tuesday at the Wisconsin State Capitol.

GO HERE to learn more about the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday rallies in response to the hasty unveiling of Right To Work (For Less) legislation in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin: Rally to Stop Right to Work

from my email ...

BREAKING: There will be a rally to protest the introduction of Right to Work legislation Tuesday, February 24 and Wednesday February 25 at 12:00 p.m. at the state Capitol. We must stand together for our rights as workers and raise our voices in our democracy to stop Right to Work legislation from moving forward in Wisconsin.

WHAT: Rally to Oppose Right to Work
WHEN: 12:00 p.m. Tuesday February 24 and 12:00 p.m. Wednesday February 25
WHERE: State Street Side of the Capitol

The Senate Committee on Labor and Government Reform will be holding a hearing Tuesday, February 24. Please join us at 9:00 a.m. to testify in opposition of Right to Work.

You can also CONTACT your legislators in opposition of Right to Work. The legislative hotline is: 1-800-362-9472

Sign the petition to stop Right to Work in Wisconsin.

Republicans are planning to ram this legislation through in an extraordinary session at lightning pace. An extraordinary session changes the rules, limits debate and makes a mockery out of our democracy. A Right to Work bill could pass both houses and be signed into law by the Governor in days.

Making Wisconsin a Right to Work state will not create jobs. Claimed advantages of Right to Work are unproven. Nationally recognized economists agree Right to Work provides no discernible economic advantage. By lowering wages, Right to Work would weaken consumption and may undermine Wisconsin’s small businesses which depend on workers having wages to spend.

Stand up, fight back, participate in democracy. Join us at the Capitol.

In Solidarity,

Phil Neuenfeldt, President

Stephanie Bloomingdale, Secretary-Treasurer

P.S. Forward this email to a friend to let them know how they can get involved. Spread the word – let’s stand up for justice and workers.

Wisconsin: GOP leaders call for special session next week on right-to-work

http://www.jsonline.com/news/statepolitics/gop-leaders-call-for-special-session-next-week-on-right-to-work-b99448708z1-292939361.html

Madison — Republican leaders are fast-tracking so-called right-to-work legislation with a special session, ignoring objections from Gov. Scott Walker and giving the clearest sign yet of how his influence has weakened in Wisconsin as he pursues the presidency outside the state.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) said that the Legislature would call its own extraordinary session — a step that can be taken without action by the governor. The votes on the legislation could occur within a week, Republican lawmakers said, sending a strong message to the Republican governor and public that lawmakers will act on its own in his absence.

...

But on right to work, the governor has taken a different tack and told lawmakers it would be a "distraction" from more important issues, even though Walker himself sponsored similar legislation two decades ago as a state lawmaker. His office had no immediate comment Friday.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) kicked off the legislative session by saying the issue needed to be taken up quickly. Some of his fellow Republicans have expressed reservations about the plan. Speaking to conservative talk radio host Charlie Sykes Friday morning, Fitzgerald said that he hadn't gotten got a commitment from the Republican governor that he would sign the legislation. Walker has consistently declined to say he would do so but few Republicans believe he would veto the measure. "Certainly we've had enough discussions that I'm confident the governor would sign it," Fitzgerald said.

As expected, the Urinal/Sentinel's article is full of distortions regarding right-to-work-for-less laws.

USDA Approves ‘Untested, Inherently Risky’ GMO Apple

https://www.organicconsumers.org/blog/usda-approves-%E2%80%98untested-inherently-risky%E2%80%99-gmo-apple

On Friday, February 13, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved the first genetically engineered apple, despite hundreds of thousands of petitions asking the USDA to reject it. According an article in Politico, the USDA said the GMO apple “doesn’t pose any harm to other plants or pests.” Great. But what about potential harm to the humans who consume them?

The Arctic Apple (Golden Delicious and Granny varieties), developed by Canada-based Okanagan Specialty Fruit, shockingly doesn’t require approval by the U.S. Food & Drug Association (FDA). The FDA will merely conduct a “voluntary review” before, presumably, rubber-stamping the apple for use in restaurants, institutions (including schools and hospitals) and grocery stores—with no meaningful long- (or even short-) term safety testing for its potential impact on human health.

Here’s why that should concern every consumer out there, especially parents of young children. In April 2013, we interviewed scientists about the genetic engineering technology used to create the Arctic Apple, whose only claim to fame is that it doesn’t turn brown when sliced. The benefit to consumers? Being able to eat apples without having any sense of how old they are?

Given that the dsRNA from our food, and presumably the Frankenapple, will enter the bloodstream and cells of consumers, safety research should be done BEFORE this GMO apple is put on the grocery shelf to prove that the dsRNA that enters consumers' bodies will not harm them. To date, no such research has been reported, so the Frankenapple is flying in the dark.

On the contrary, recent research has shown that dsRNAs can transfer from plants to humans and other animals through food. The biotech industry has always claimed that genetically engineered DNA or RNA is destroyed by human digestion, eliminating the danger of these mutant organisms damaging human genes or human health. But many biotech scientists say otherwise. They point to evidence that the dsRNA present in food survive digestion in the stomach and intestines and actually enter the bloodstream and tissues of the body, where it can influence the functioning of the eater's cells.

The Progressive: Fifty Shades of Protest

http://www.progressive.org/news/2015/02/188004/fifty-shades-protest

During the movie’s Valentine’s Day weekend release, leftists, dominatrices, anti-pornography feminists, and family-values religious traditionalists from the United States to the United Kingdom to Norway demonstrated against the big screen adaptation of E.L. James’ novel about a sadomasochistic relationship between Christian Grey, a billionaire who practices bondage, with Anastasia Steele, a virginal young student.

On February 12 this reporter stumbled upon a demo at a theater in Westwood, about a block from the UCLA campus, where about six mostly male left-wingers picketed Grey, claiming the movie promoted violence against women. Using a loudspeaker, they chanted, “Fifty shades of degradation! Fifty shades of humiliation!” and held signs bearing similar slogans as well as the website for Revolution, newspaper of the Maoist Revolutionary Communist Party.

...

Taylor is also an initiator of the organization Stop Patriarchy, which calls for an end to “the enslavement and degredation of women” through pornography and patriarchy. The group also protested Grey in Seattle, Oakland, and Los Angeles, with signs demanding: “Stop romanticizing women’s enslavement. Start fighting for women’s liberation!” and “Whips, shackles, chains and terror—if a dog was treated the way Anastasia Steele is you’d know it’s abuse.”

Taylor claims a dozen demonstrators chanted, “Stalking, abuse and sexual assault are not love—they’re signs of abuse,” and that bystanders were “very thankful” the protests took place, although this journalist heard a passerby heckle picketers at Westwood. Taylor explains, “In every sphere of the culture and social life today women’s rights and bodies are under assault. . . Some of the most concentrated expressions of this are the ever-more degrading, ever-more violent, ever-more humiliating cruel and revenge-filled pornography that’s becoming more and more mainstream.”

Republicans Really, Really Fear Russ Feingol

http://cognidissidence.blogspot.com/2015/02/republicans-really-really-fear-russ.html

While there is rumor running rampant that Russ Feingold is going to return to Wisconsin to run for his old seat, it is not clear at this time how much of this rumor is based on fact and how much of it is just the fantasy of hope-starved Wisconsinites. Feingold hasn't even returned from his ambassadorship to Africa.

...

The National Republican Senatorial Committee sent a press release on Tuesday calling attention to Feingold's role in passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, enacted six years ago today.

"With Russ Feingold plotting his return to power, it’s worth remembering that when he voted for the failed $830 billion stimulus he claimed spending programs would balance our budget," the release reads.

By failure, the Republicans, of course, mean creating job and having the stock market break new record highs.
