Spanberger and Vega debate called off

Organizers have called off a debate between Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) and Republican Yesli Vega, saying they could not get through an impasse over moderators and security concerns before a deadline set by the congresswoman’s campaign.

The organizers of the debate — the Prince William Committee of 100 and the Prince William-Fauquier Area League of Women Voters — said they asked Prince William County police to provide officers for security for the Aug. 21 debate and were in discussions “with a respected and experienced moderator.”

But the campaigns for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District candidates hit “an impasse over security concerns and disagreements over proposed moderators,” ending talks on a possible agreement for the debate, the organizers said.

“The League and the Committee of 100 volunteers worked tirelessly to accommodate requests on everything from the format and media coverage to security; however, we were unable to reach an acceptable compromise within the timeframe set by Congresswoman’s campaign,” the organizers said in a joint statement Monday.

Nurse who exposed 'uterus collector' still faces consequences

When American nurse Dawn Wooten started asking questions about the alarming number of unwanted hysterectomies and gynaecological procedures being performed on detained immigrants at her workplace in Georgia, she was unfamiliar with the term whistleblower.

Now, more than two years on, she has no regrets about having raised the alarm with her report on Irwin County Detention Center that shook the US and Congress with allegations against a gynaecologist so notorious he was known as the “uterus collector”.

But Wooten is still coming to terms with the repercussions.

Her whistleblower status has come to define her identity and much of her life. It drove Wooten and four of her five children into hiding, where they slept in one bed to comfort one other. It left her depressed and suicidal, pushed her from independence to reliance on government benefits and has made it almost impossible for her to do the job that she loves.

The 44-year-old single mother from Tifton, Georgia sometimes gets up early as if she were going to work and puts on her nurse’s uniform and stethoscope before walking around her home. Such is her longing to work again as a nurse.

She cannot get a job because she exposed wrongdoing by a doctor. This is WRONG.

Please forgive me

if I am a bit snarkier and nastier than usual today. I'm tired and not in a mood to suffer fools gladly. We have just done back-to-back gem and mineral shows over the past two weekends, and though they were quite successful and we did well both financially and professionally, I'm kind of played out. Thank goodness I have a two and a half week break before the next (and last) big one of the year. We'd like to do more, but spousal unit is still working full time (which for him amounts to about 60 hours per week!) so they would have to be relatively local, and we're looking for something spring/summer rather than in the fall, when everything seems to be all bunched up.

Also, our other little barn cat, the one-eyed tortie, seems to have disappeared. I saw her come out of the woods Friday morning so I suspect that possibly the people whose house is back there may now have lured both of our cats there. I don't know them at all---nobody does---since their house is set way back from the road. I have continued to put food out and someone is eating it, but heaven knows who. I haven't been able to catch anything on the back door cam yet. I may have to get new barn cats after the next gem show.

One funny from the show---we had a caterer (the sponsor's mom, I think; great food!) and at the end of the show, the sponsor's kids were running around offering the leftover baked goods. When they came by our tables I asked them what they had. They were as tired as we were, and one said, holding out a plate, "Cookins and muffies." We all got tickled, I took one of each, and as they went around offering, I heard them giggling and offering "cookins and muffies" to everyone else.

Florida Dads Accused Of Shooting Each Other's Daughters In Road Rage Incident

Two Florida men are each facing attempted murder charges after they allegedly shot at each other’s daughters during a road rage incident Saturday night.

William Joseph Hale, 35, and Frank Gilliard Allison, 43, were both arrested after a “cat and mouse” high-speed chase on Highway 1 in Nassau County, Florida.

The two men began arguing with each other on the road while driving aggressively and brake checking each other, according to Jacksonville radio station WOKV.

Things got so tense, a witness told Nassau County Sheriff’s deputies that “he knew something bad was going to happen.”

“They were both speeding and driving recklessly northbound in Jacksonville and then into Nassau County on U.S. 1, brake checking and trying to cut each other off,” Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper told Newsweek. “They obviously didn’t like the way the other one was driving so they were both acting like idiots.”

GOP Senate Nominee Adam Laxalt's Family Endorses His Democratic Opponent

The hits just keep on coming for Nevada’s Republican Senate nominee, Adam Laxalt. The state’s Trump-endorsed former attorney general was part of a viral news story last week for being one of the beneficiaries at a National Republican Senatorial Committee fundraiser—the one where Mehmet Oz spoke in front of one of Hitler’s cars.

Now, the Nevada Independent reports that 14 members of the Laxalt family have endorsed his Democratic opponent, incumbent Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto. The paper obtained a letter from the group, which doesn’t mention Laxalt or his Senate campaign, but praises Masto, who also served as attorney general of the state. “We believe that Catherine possesses a set of qualities that clearly speak of what we like to call ‘Nevada grit,’” the letter said, adding, “Catherine has consistently demonstrated a fierce loyalty to her home state of Nevada. She has always put Nevada first—even when it meant working against her own party’s policies.”

The group told the outlet that “no further comments will be made, as we believe this letter speaks for itself.”

It’s a pretty big embarrassment for Laxalt, but safe to say he’s probably used to that by now. When he was Nevada’s Republican nominee for governor in 2018, 12 of his family members urged people not to vote for him. (He lost to Steve Sisolak by four points.) This time around, his family is taking an even bigger step in officially endorsing his opponent.

Wyoming ranch for troubled teens closes following abuse allegations

A rural Wyoming ranch accused of subjecting troubled girls to forced labor and humiliating punishments has notified state regulators it halted operations.

The closure of Trinity Teen Solutions comes amid an ongoing criminal investigation and a lawsuit against the ranch, and follows an NBC News investigation last month that revealed a long history of allegations of hard labor and abusive treatment at the for-profit facility offering Christian-based therapy in northwest Wyoming. The facility has denied many of the former residents’ allegations in court filings, and no charges have been filed.

Trinity Teen Solutions informed the Wyoming Department of Family Services, which licenses the ranch, that it stopped providing services and enrolling new teens on Sept. 28, officials said.

The company maintains its state license and was not ordered to stop operating, a Department of Family Services spokesman said. The ranch also remains in good standing with the Joint Commission, a nonprofit organization that accredits hospitals and behavioral health centers, a spokeswoman said.

It’s unclear why the ranch, which opened in 2002, abruptly suspended its business. Ranch founder and owner Angie Woodward did not respond to emails and phone calls. Trinity Teen Solutions’ website remains active, but its Facebook and Twitter accounts were deleted in the past several weeks.

Paris Hilton: It's time to stop institutional child abuse

In my 2020 documentary, "This is Paris," I revealed a secret I had kept for more than 20 years: When I was 16, I was taken from my home in the middle of the night and spent almost two years at a series of residential treatment facilities. My parents had been conned into believing that my diagnosed attention deficit disorder behavior would be fixed with “tough love.”

I’m still processing the trauma, doing the hard work it takes to tell the whole story in a memoir that will be published next year. It takes all my courage to talk about it, but I couldn’t stand knowing that children as young as 8 years old are being sent to these “troubled teen” programs by parents who don’t know and government agencies that don’t care.

The last stop on my terrible journey was Provo Canyon School, a lockdown facility where I was sent after I escaped from a couple boot-camp type places. On my first day, I was forced to remove all my clothes, squat and cough, and submit to a gynecological exam – all watched closely by male staff. Although it was an extremely uncomfortable experience, I was led to believe it was a legitimate, routine check for contraband. But what I couldn’t understand as a 16-year-old girl was why that internal exam would be done to me frequently during my time at Provo, and only during the middle of the night.

I was repeatedly awakened by staff shining a bright flashlight in my face, pulled out of bed and told to be quiet as I was ushered down my dorm’s hallway to an “exam room.” Sleep-deprived and heavily medicated, I didn’t understand what was happening. I was forced to lie on a padded table, spread my legs and submit to gynecological exams. I remember crying while they held me down. I kept saying, "No!" and asking, "Why?" They just said, "Shut up. Be quiet. Stop struggling or you’ll go to Obs."

Don't ignore this just because she's Paris Hilton. She is advocating for a very real cause. Thousands of kids are being abused in these places.

America was a promise of security for a Sikh family killed in California by an employee

Days before 8-month-old Aroohi Dheri was killed, she babbled one of her first words. She was calling for her dad, Jasdeep Singh, 36, and it would turn out to be the sole time she ever got to do so.

“She said ‘pappa’ for the first time, and the only time,” Jasdeep’s cousin, Amarinder Singh, told NBC News.

Baby Aroohi, her parents Jasdeep and Jasleen Kaur, 27, and her paternal uncle Amandeep Singh, were found dead Wednesday in a rural area of Merced, California, not far from where they were taken two days earlier.

Jesus Manuel Salgado, a former employee at Jasdeep and Amandeep’s trucking company, has been arrested and charged with murder and kidnapping. His brother, Alberto Salgado, was also arrested and charged with aiding him. NBC News could not identify a lawyer for either suspect.

The days after news of the deaths have been a calvary for those left behind, Amarinder Singh said. Amandeep left a widow and two young children, and Jasdeep left his parents. Jasleen’s parents, who live in India, were never able to meet their granddaughter. A circle of tight-knit cousins in California is also reeling from the loss.

Brett Favre says he is a victim of media smears in Mississippi welfare scandal

Former NFL star Brett Favre says he has been unjustly accused of wrongdoing in a welfare scandal in his home state of Mississippi.

“I have been unjustly smeared in the media,” the Hall of Fame quarterback said in the statement to Fox News on Tuesday. “I have done nothing wrong, and it is past time to set the record straight.

“No one ever told me, and I did not know, that funds designated for welfare recipients were going to the University or me. I tried to help my alma mater USM [University of Southern Mississippi], a public Mississippi state university, raise funds for a wellness center. My goal was and always will be to improve the athletic facilities at my university.”

In May, the Mississippi Department of Human Services filed a civil lawsuit against Favre, three former pro wrestlers and several other people and businesses to try to recover millions of misspent welfare dollars. The lawsuit said the defendants “squandered” more than $20m from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) anti-poverty program.

Favre has not been charged with any criminal wrongdoing in the case. Mississippi auditor Shad White said Favre was paid $1.1m for speeches but did not show up. Favre has repaid the money, but White said in October that Favre still owed $228,000 in interest. In a Facebook post when he repaid the first $500,000, Favre said he didn’t know the money he received came from welfare funds.

Our Vicky has disappeared

Our barn cat, Vicky, who came to us two years ago with her companion, Winnie, has gone missing. I last saw her on Wednesday evening of last week when she came to supper as usual. On Thursday neither of the girls came to breakfast, but that's not out of the ordinary. Winnie showed up for supper without Vicky and that has been the pattern ever since. I have looked everywhere, thinking she might have gotten trapped in an outbuilding or hit by a car, but there is no sign of her. She is very shy with humans so I doubt she has been taken in by anyone. I fear she may have encountered a coyote or a bear, both of which exist in our area, or been accidentally shot as hunters have been "tuning up" their shotguns in the area. I miss her dreadfully, her tiny meow and her amazingly heavy-footed tromp down the deck stairs when called for a meal. Even though they went separate ways most of the time, Winnie seems a bit lost without her, and I wonder if she will be able to keep the rodent population down on her own.
