Chicago’s fishy NATO arrests

Perhaps the most interesting tidbit of information fueling the rumor mill is whether the three suspects have been targeted because of a candid video they shot and released the previous week, showing CPD officers searching their car and intimidating them as they entered Chicago. The video, which gleaned considerable online attention, showed one officer recommending that protesters receive “a billy club to the fucking skull.”

The two reportedly stated that they possessed explosives that they intended to detonate, but no such devices were recovered when one of the arrestee’s homes was searched, and the police did not perform a search on the home of the other. Nonetheless, he was arrested for discussing the ingredients for making a pipe bomb (presumably with a police informant, but this remains unclear).

Perlstein’s Rolling Stone article last week is reminder enough that accusing authorities of entrapment is unlikely to work in the defendants’ favor, even if evidence is on their side. “Not a single ‘terrorism’ indictment has been thrown out for entrapment since 9/11,” he noted.

NATO Seeks To Formalize Afghan Withdrawal

Chicago summit seeks to outline timeline for local forces to take over amid plunging support for the war.

Afghan forces will be taking on a leading security role next year rather than in 2014 as originally envisioned, in part due to plunging support for the war in Europe and the United States, points out the Associated Press. Karzai insisted Afghanistan is looking forward to the war’s end "so that Afghanistan is no longer a burden on the shoulder of our friends in the international community, on the shoulders of the United States and our other allies.”

Despite the signs that NATO allies want to get done with Afghanistan as quickly as possible, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen emphasized that “there will be no rush for the exits,” reports Reuters. Despite France’s decision to withdraw its troops by the end of this year, Rasmussen expressed confidence that “we will stay committed to our operation in Afghanistan and see it through to a successful end.”

Border Vigilante Reportedly Plotted Deadly Raids On Latinos

Ready was a longtime member of the National Socialist Movement, the largest neo-Nazi organization in the nation. In recent years, he founded a group called the U.S. Border Guard, which organized armed patrols in the Arizona desert. The group would search for immigrants and frequently hold them at gunpoint until legitimate law enforcement would arrive.

Ready also advocated for landmines to be used along the U.S.-Mexican border as a form of immigration control. At the scene of the massacre, federal authorities discovered at least six military-grade projectile grenades that were designed to pierce armor.

Culture War Commencements

Obama's speech at Barnard and Romney's at Liberty were a stark illustration of their ideological differences

....this week all you have to do is read Barack Obama’s speech at Barnard and Mitt Romney’s at Liberty University to see a dichotomy as stark as the one on either side of a picket line...

It was how(Obama) talked about the Constitution, of which he said, “Yes, it had its flaws — flaws that this nation has strived to perfect over time. Questions of race and gender were unresolved. No woman’s signature graced the original document[.]” But, he added, “What made this document special was that it provided the space — the possibility — for those who had been left out of our charter to fight their way in. It provided people the language to appeal to principles and ideals that broadened democracy’s reach. It allowed for protest, and movements, and the dissemination of new ideas that would repeatedly, decade after decade, change the world — a constant forward movement that continues to this day.”
.....

Contrast that with Romney at Liberty this weekend, in which he cited David Landes to declare that “Culture makes all the difference… . Central to America’s rise to global leadership is our Judeo-Christian tradition, with its vision of the goodness and possibilities of every life.” There was the purposeful declaration that “marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman,’ the shoutout to the anti-gay marriage Chick Fil-A founder and various clergy, the sermonizing.
