Most Official Emails Were Not Auto-Archived Until February (2015), Says State Department Official

WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department said Friday it was unable to automatically archive the emails of most of its senior officials until last month, which could mean potential problems for historical record-keeping amid criticism of former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's use of a private email server while in office.

On the same day the department announced that it was temporarily shutting down parts of its unclassified Internet-linked systems, including email, to harden security in the wake of several hacking attacks, spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that only Secretary of State John Kerry's emails had been automatically retained before February of this year. Kerry's emails have been automatically stored since he took the job in February 2013, she said.

Psaki suggested the inability to automatically retain the emails of all but its most senior official before last month was because the department lacked the technical capability to capture them unless individual employees took action on their own. She said she could not be more specific but that the department hoped to be able to automatically archive all employees' emails by the end of this year.

Hillary Clinton Did Not Keep Personal Emails (Destroyed 10,000s emails)

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton admitted Tuesday that she discarded tens of thousands of emails from a private server kept at her New York home.

In her first extended public remarks about her exclusive use of a personal email account to conduct government business, Clinton was adamant that she complied with all applicable rules and said she went “above and beyond” by handing over some 30,000 work-related emails to the State Department.

But her admission that she did not turn over roughly half the messages in her private account and will not submit them to independent scrutiny will likely fan the controversy.

“At the end, I chose not to keep my private personal emails—emails about planning Chelsea’s wedding or my mother’s funeral arrangements, condolence notes to friends as well as yoga routines, family vacations, the other things you typically find in inboxes,” Clinton said, saying attorneys she paid categorized the correspondence.

She destroyed tens of thousands of emails solely in her possession form the account she used to run the State Department. This story is not going away. And this is EXACTLY why you don't mix personal and business on the same email. This stinks.

2015 Hillary Clinton still hasn't learned what 2007 Obama taught

Campaign Obama would have addressed and moved past a story like Hillary's email use in a day or two. During his campaigns Obama was masterful at getting out and ahead of stories quickly and efficiently. His skill was to hit the issue head on and pivot or counterpoint to stay in control of the frame.

Hillary didn't do this in 2007-2008 and clearly hasn't learned still. Maybe it's hubris or a disconnect with modern politics. But, if she can't learn how to quickly neuter a story like this one, it will be a long and painful campaign. Regardless of how much you like what she supposedly stands for or what she represents, to win she needs to learn how to do more than raise money and hope to simply weather the storms.
