The Army's First Black Nurses Were Relegated to Caring for Nazi Prisoners of War

Prohibited from treating white GIs, the women felt betrayed by the country they sought to serve

On the summer afternoon in 1944 that 23-year-old Elinor Powell walked into the Woolworth’s lunch counter in downtown Phoenix, it never occurred to her that she would be refused service. She was, after all, an officer in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, serving her country during wartime, and she had grown up in a predominantly white, upwardly mobile Boston suburb that didn’t subject her family to discrimination.

But the waiter who turned Elinor away wasn’t moved by her patriotism. All he saw was her brown skin. It probably never occurred to him that the woman in uniform was from a family that served its country, as Elinor’s father had in the First World War, as well as another relative who had been part of the Union Army during the Civil War. The only thing that counted at that moment—and in that place, where Jim Crow laws remained in force—was the waiter’s perception of a black army nurse as not standing on equal footing with his white customers.

Infuriated and humiliated, Elinor left Woolworth’s and returned to POW Camp Florence, in the Arizona desert. She was stationed there to look after German prisoners of war, who had been captured in Europe and Northern Africa and then sent across the Atlantic Ocean, for detainment in the United States during World War II.

Elinor, like many other black nurses in the Army Nurse Corps, was tasked with caring for German POWs—men who represented Hitler’s racist regime of white supremacy. Though their presence is rarely discussed in American history, from 1942 to 1946, there were 371,683 German POWs scattered across the country in more than 600 camps. Some POWs remained until 1948.....(rest of the article at the link)

Lindsay Graham is not John McCain's friend and never was.

Lindsey Graham: White House should apologize for McCain remark

BY AVERY ANAPOL - 05/13/18 07:21 AM EDT

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said in an interview broadcast Sunday that the White House should apologize for an aide’s derisive comment about Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

Graham told host Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation” that he was not satisfied with how the Trump administration has responded to the remark.

“It's [a] pretty disgusting thing to say,” Graham said. “If it was a joke, it was a terrible joke. I just wish somebody from the White House would tell the country that was inappropriate, that's not who we are in the Trump administration.”.....“It doesn't hurt you at all to do the right thing and to be big,” he said. “[If] somebody in my office said such a thing about somebody, I would apologize on behalf of the office.”......Graham recently spent two days in Arizona with the 81-year-old senator, who is his closest friend in the Senate.

Steve Schmidt could not have said it better...

“We’ve listened to this guy for many, many years in this country on his moral high horse,”. “Assaulting the dignity of gay people, across the board. His moral preening is famous throughout the land.”He is the most obsequious of all of Trump’s cultists in the cabinet,” “We have never seen such slobbering servility by a high government official in this country than we do with Mike Pence and Donald Trump. It is amazing.”

More than 30,000 nursing home eviction notices to be sent in Louisiana Thursday

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/05/07/louisiana-nursing-home-eviction-notices-could-create-mass-chaos/588867002/

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana's Department of Health will begin sending nursing home eviction notices Thursday to more than 30,000 residents who could lose Medicaid under the budget passed by the state House of Representatives.

"The Louisiana Department of Health is beginning the process of notifying all impacted enrollees that some people may lose their Medicaid eligibility," Department of Health spokesman Bob Johannessen said. "The goal of the department is to give notice to all affected people as soon as possible in order that they begin developing their appropriate plans."

Gov. John Bel Edwards' staff has planned a press conference Wednesday for more details, a day before the notices are set to be mailed to 37,000 Medicaid recipients in nursing homes or other long-term care facilities.

&quot The Department of Health) told us they're sending out the letters May 10," said Mark Berger, executive director of the Louisiana Nursing Home Association, during testimony at the Senate Finance Committee meeting Monday.

White House requests cuts to children's health insurance funding-CNN

By Tami Luhby and Betsy Klein, CNN/May 8, 2018

(CNN)The White House is seeking to cut funding from the Children's Health Insurance Program, known as CHIP, as part of its larger request for cuts to the federal budget in a rescissions package sent to Congress this week.

The request from President Donald Trump includes a $7 billion cut to the popular program, part of $15 billion in overall cuts. Some $2 billion would come from a contingency fund that was created to prevent states from running out of money, with the rest coming from funding that Congress has authorized for the program but states haven't spent.
The administration defended the cuts, telling reporters Monday the money would come from untapped leftover funds and wouldn't affect operations at CHIP or in other health care areas.
"This is money that was never going to be spent," said one official.

Trump want to do this and here we are in election season. what a fool, i bet repubs are reeling right now saying 'wtf is wrong with him?

McCain doesn't want Trump at funeral, friends tell White House

McCain, who has been battling brain cancer, and Trump have had a turbulent relationship. The senator wants Vice President Mike Pence to attend instead.

by Rebecca Shabad / May.05.2018 / 4:31 PM ET / Updated May.05.2018 / 5:07 PM ET

WASHINGTON — People close to Sen. John McCain have told the White House that the ailing Arizona Republican does not want President Donald Trump to attend his funeral and would like Vice President Mike Pence to come instead, a source close to McCain confirmed to NBC News.

McCain, 81, has been battling an aggressive form of brain cancer for nearly a year and is back home in Arizona after he underwent surgery last month for an intestinal infection.

The senator, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, said in an audio excerpt this week of his forthcoming memoir, "I don't know how much longer I'll be here," according to a clip aired by NPR.

Giuliani says Sessions should 'close' Mueller probe

rofl. Cause he thinks judges are not allowed to allow wiretapping in a case. Thats only if anyone associated with Trump that is. if Sessions talk to the judge about the wiretapping the judge will tell him, wiretapping is not illegal in this case. Then he goes back and tell Trump and then Trump will tweet hateful Trumps against Sessions.
