Glad you asked

The book 'Mere Christianity' was taken from a series of radio addresses Lewis made during WWII, if I recall. Fundies love to pick and choose from his various writings as they try to prove notions at which the man would've recoiled. Very few of them know or will admit that he advocated ANY form of socialism, their most hated word apparently. Tell them that the woman he married was a strong advocate of communism and they'll lynch you for a heretic no matter the color of your skin. If you haven't yet read it, let me recommend 'The Screwtape Letters' as well. That and 'The Great Divorce' make up my personal favorite CS Lewis trilogy.

It IS relevant to Boehner's hypocrisy, especially in this instance where he's cherry picking Lincoln; the pattern remains the same - twist the full truth to suit your own evil purposes. Lincoln was a man of his times. How could he not be? But he grew in wisdom ahead of his fellows and clearly if born today would be a Yellow Dog Democrat. Modern fundies don't like that fact whispered in their ears any more than they want to hear about the real CS Lewis. Those historical figures are reserved to bolster modern GOP fascism. "The party of Lincoln" my ass!

If you have a good enough head start and can run fast, try telling GOP fundies that Jesus is a socialist, and then watch all hell break loose. As you look back over your shoulder and try to pick up speed, 'cause your gonna need it.

I'm impressed

Not only by what you describe but also another ancient desert method of cooling: the clay pots buried in a pit which has been well covered.

One of the smartest houses I ever read about in Architectural Digest was a place in the AZ desert, somewhere around Phoenix if memory serves. The builder had run long underground pipes radiating in all directions, and they ended with a covered u-turn popup just above ground. At the middle of the hub, in the central hall, the cooled air got sucked up a tall chimney and carried any heat in the house up with it by natural air flow. According to the article, the homeowner said the house kept itself at a maximum of 78 degrees even in the worst of summer with no mechanical aid required. He had also backed the house up against a rock cliff which absorbed heat in the day; then when the curtains were opened on cold nights, the radiated heat warmed the house.

That's how I'd build if money were no problem. Since it is, I might someday sell my beloved Vic and just build myself a little one-story straw bale house. (haha - I could paint it pink and attach a fake curly stovepipe to the outside for a 'tail', then wait to see if anyone got the joke; which they wouldn't around here.) Set up enough solar panels and I might even succeed in going off grid entirely. I don't care for modern design much, unless it's extremely futuristic. But I'm absolutely mad about modern technology.

I hope

that this new technology becomes affordable for the public faster than Bloom Boxes have. I'm still waiting on mine. Yet hopefully...

It's also hypocritical

When the teabaggers quote Jefferson about watering the tree of liberty and conveniently leave out his statement that the rich ought to shoulder ALL the tax burden for the rest of the country. Well, Jefferson said and did a lot of things, some good, some evil. But cafeteria style patriotism is sheer insanity, and the teabagger mob mentality illustrates that to the extreme. It reminds me of the alleged-Christian fundies who absolutely love CS Lewis, quote him in all sorts of ways to prove themselves legitimate faithful, but get the vapors and their guns when you point out that the theologian also said the practice of Christianity absolutely requires some form of (GASP) socialism!

Tell the truth

My dear departed Chows channeled this to the artist, didn't they? I used to call them Alf sometimes for the gastronomic similarities. Come to think of it, they all had red hair; but I don't remember if Alf had their beautiful black tongues. But they could've been close cousins. There might be an Alf in every Chow.

Question:

Do you remember the Texas Ferhengi who caused such a train wreck? Or even as far back as Teddy R's Bull Moose Party? Etc. It's not an infallible plan, but when it works, it works beautifully. If they want to shoot themselves in the foot, Her Irishness will be only too glad to tote their ammunition - without charge!

That party's Gone With the Wind - for good

And they were no angels, either. They've hated the New Deal and every decent thing that ever existed. The old ones were just a little more wary of self destruction, that's all.

Yes

The UNholy trinity.

March 29, 2013

You go, grrrrl!

I'm already mentally composing my letter to Mikey begging him to start a 'real' Christian party. He's the only one who can tell the rest of us what a 'real' Christian is, and the sooner he gets about it the better. Never know when Armageddon's a'comin', you know.

March 29, 2013

You're right about some people

But not all of us.

Yellow Dogs never sleep, neither do we slumber. We might even be able to teach Masada something about 'never again'. Because quite frankly, I consider the GOP a bunch of godforsaken fascists.

About IrishAyes

Still an ardent Irish-American Catholic damnYankee Yellow Dog Democrat socialist after all these years. (cue Simon music) Army brat and wife for many years, now have been on the loose far longer than I was married. After my two red chows died, I took in a mini-beagle cross that I named Molly Maguire, thinking she might need a good Irish name like my original real one. Later she got a baby sister, a smooth-coat JRT I named Brigid after the greatest of the ancient Celtic goddesses. My great-grandfather and his son fought for Michael Collins and barely made it out of Ireland one step ahead of John Bull. They slipped over to Wales for new identities and then forward to the States for a fresh start. That makes me second generation of illegal but certainly justified immigrants. There are precious few people to whose defense I fly immediately, but the list includes Hillary Clinton, President Barack Obama even when I disagree with him - it happens! - and living Irish patriots Gerry Adams and Martin \\\'Mind Your Kneecaps\\\' McGuiness. I pray earnestly for a united and free Ireland rescued from all official British occupation, with every square inch of alleged \\\'ancestral lands\\\' now held immorally and illegally by the invaders returned to the rightful owners. Irish-only rule for Ireland. No foreign masters anymore! I find it passing strange when Brits chide ME about \'interfering\' in Irish politics!
