Maybe because I miss Beloved so much, I'm going to share a brief story about him which has nothing directly to do with this thread, but I'll risk it anyway.
He'd had major dental surgery and was confined to bed, virtually helpless and unable to speak. But 'The Unforgiven' had just come out on DVD or tape, I don't remember which now. Anyway, when the movie reached the scene where it's a long shot of a rider galloping across the open plain, he propped himself up on one elbow and almost shouted in disgust: "WRONG FILTER!"
And he was right, of course. Didn't hear another peep from him the rest of the day.
Sri Lankan enemies
He was Sinhalese and helped Tamils and loved America. His number was up before he ever made it to the States.
While I'm glad you had no problems in L.A., that's not always the case.
The Naval Yard
in Virginia, I think, already has severe flooding issues due to global warming and the rise of the ocean.

Regardless, one of the absolute requirements I had in choosing a retirement area was that it had to be 600-800 feet above sea level. I found a place 800 feet above, and at that it sits atop a really high hill. The 100 year high water mark is at least 300 feet below my place. It's all those poor souls on lower ground that get my sympathy. Even the tornadoes that rip apart most of the MidWest seem to veer off just before barreling through town, which I attribute to the topography.
But if the Big Earthquake strikes, all bets are off.
You simply can't find anywhere free of all danger from natural disasters.

However, since wars there are, I'm grateful for the protection these noble animals offer our sons, daughters,husbands, and wives in the field, to increase everyone's chance of survival. Not too many soldiers crave the battlefield experience, and any decent commander carries a huge burden about having to send them in harm's way.
Saw it, loved it
Their training is a bit different from jungle patrol dogs, to the best of my understanding. But they do indeed deserve the best we can offer them.
I'll have to choose carefully when I watch the film after it's available to me, though.
While my fiance was a Sri Lankan political refugee vetted by Amnesty International, his political enemies killed him just before he gained citizenship - which would've been all on his own, because his idea of honor wouldn't let him marry until he'd proven himself. Sometimes I have flashbacks 20 years later and come undone. I know he'd have loved 42.
I worked in Los Angeles in the film industry
Long enough to develop a fierce aversion to many on the top rung of the ladder for the way they treated people less elevated.
But everyone except the jerks LOVED Ed Asner, and so did I even though sadly I never got to meet him in person. But people said he was every bit as nice as Tom Snyder whom I did get to know a little.
If anyone's in touch with Ed, please let him know about this thread. He deserves to see it. And if any jerks show up, I don't know what I'll do but it won't be pretty.
As one half of an inter-racial couple in the 1990's
I saw how hideously people can still be treated by some who are not fit to tie their shoelaces. You'd think a place like Los Angeles would have a better face to present, but it didn't.
I'll be glad to do so
But by the time I get a chance to see the movie, this thread will probably have cobwebs no matter how worthy I'm sure it will be. I retired to a tiny MidWest town where the nearest decent movie theatre is 60 miles away and I no longer drive; my only hope is that 42 will be available on NetFlix by the time I subscribe in the very near future.
I have read much about the movie, though, and look forward to seeing it in some format ASAP. Will also enjoy reading the comments in this thread.
For the zilch that it's worth, I came of age during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's and was privileged to rub shoulders with certain participants. Got myself kicked out of more than one school as a result. Do I regret it? Not on your life. (Although you do know that old joke, don't you, that if you remember the '60's you weren't really there.)
PS: I clicked on the link from the home page and only now notice the Group hosting it. While I won't apologize for blundering in, I'll understand if someone feels my time could best be spent elsewhere.
