Is this a physics question? I don't know.

Though I recently told friends in another group that I'm dimming the lights for summer, my busiest season, something has come up that I need to ask about.

My whole-house attic fan just died. I count on it to delay the need for actual air conditioning, but it would cost me more to have an electrician replace the motor than it would to buy a new unit, which would also cost precious $.

As an, uh... uncommonly thrifty person, I've been thinking about buying one of those extra powerful barrel-type tornado floor fans, cutting out the need for an installer, but there's a question as to best placement. My house is 2-story with wide overhangs, so there's no problem about leaving all the upstairs windows open. Since I live alone except for 2 dogs and even sleep downstairs for various good reasons, a large fan on the floor would not be an undue inconvenience.

BUT the question arises, would it work better in the upstairs hallway, pointed in the same direction(s) or would it suck more air up from downstairs if I put it on the midway landing - pointed upstairs - where the stairs make a sharp right? And should I keep all the upstairs windows open but leave only one open downstairs? Would that create a stronger draft since no air will be going into the attic anymore?

Dimming the lights for summer

I want to wish everyone a lovely spring (what's left of it!) and summer. Unfortunately during warm weather I don't have so much time to visit online due to outdoor work and such. I also need to start taking Brigid - along with Molly - on long walks around town to make sure that if she ever goes wandering, maybe she can find her way home. Although a lot of people seem to know both dogs, it won't hurt to widen the acquaintance circle. I already know most people and their dogs around here, so if I see a dog running loose that's normally kept up, I know who to call. Collars with ID tags are pretty useless with my two furkids since each gladly relieves the other of unwanted neckwear. They're a couple of nudies, those two.

I hate to think of all the fun I'll miss with you folks, but it can't be helped. I will check in from time to time to sample a few threads though. Come autumn I'll be back underfoot again. Most of all I need to thank the vast majority of nice folks I've met for their encouragement and company.

Please be very careful

If your job involves a patrol car. You may have chosen the nick 'darkangel', but you sound to me as if you might be an angel of light nevertheless. Continue doing good but don't let your guard down. We need all the good angels we can get, here on earth helping out. Bless you.

Is this an okay time to share a quick story about something that happened in NYC when I lived there? During a terrible blizzard, a couple of patrolmen checking a backstreet dead end alley found an abandoned newborn baby who was still alive for one reason only. A starving German Shepherd had curled up around the child to protect it. I don't need to tell you what many a starving dog would've done. The patrolmen tried to coax the dog into the car but it jumped up and limped away. I'll never forget that dog and can't help wondering just a little if it might've been 'more than just a dog'.

So of course he needs counseling.

Fortunately your opinion does not control reality

And the only thing I don't understand is why you feel free to disrespect me (in the name of free speech) in the same breath that you squawk about my disagreeing with you. Are you the only one entitled to free speech? I'm not out of my lane because the group is titled Religion, not Anti-Religion for Atheists Only. Were it the latter, I wouldn't trouble you. But it's not.

Matter of fact, since I have made my point already, regardless of your refusal to see or accept it, I'm moving on for now. Got better things to do. Dad always said only a jackass answers every donkey that brays.

Don't chastise me or put words in my mouth

Just because I broadened the scope a little. You know damned well I was not dismissing that victim or any other. Does it make you feel better to accuse me w/o cause? I DON'T have a lick of sympathy for you.

Did you roll out of bed this morning with nothing else to entertain yourself?

Besides picking a totally useless fight about religion? Seems to me that's most of the problem - people unwilling to let others go their own way w/o stirring up trouble. And that goes for atheists same as everybody else.

Back with longwinded personal examples later;

However, right now, might I suggest you rethink blaming the song even though most of the choir's tone deaf?

If the teacher's guilty

We still need to remember that by far the most rapes are committed by heterosexual men. Same goes for pedophiles.

About IrishAyes

Still an ardent Irish-American Catholic damnYankee Yellow Dog Democrat socialist after all these years. (cue Simon music) Army brat and wife for many years, now have been on the loose far longer than I was married. After my two red chows died, I took in a mini-beagle cross that I named Molly Maguire, thinking she might need a good Irish name like my original real one. Later she got a baby sister, a smooth-coat JRT I named Brigid after the greatest of the ancient Celtic goddesses. My great-grandfather and his son fought for Michael Collins and barely made it out of Ireland one step ahead of John Bull. They slipped over to Wales for new identities and then forward to the States for a fresh start. That makes me second generation of illegal but certainly justified immigrants. There are precious few people to whose defense I fly immediately, but the list includes Hillary Clinton, President Barack Obama even when I disagree with him - it happens! - and living Irish patriots Gerry Adams and Martin \\\'Mind Your Kneecaps\\\' McGuiness. I pray earnestly for a united and free Ireland rescued from all official British occupation, with every square inch of alleged \\\'ancestral lands\\\' now held immorally and illegally by the invaders returned to the rightful owners. Irish-only rule for Ireland. No foreign masters anymore! I find it passing strange when Brits chide ME about \'interfering\' in Irish politics!
