But 2018 was a good year for Democrats in the Keystone State.

Gov. Tom Wolf and centrist Sen. Bob Casey, Jr., both Democrats, were reelected last year. Sen. Bernie Sanders aggressively campaigned for John Fetterman, Wolf’s lieutenant governor, in Philadelphia.

On top of that, Pennsylvania Republicans lost three seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, and Democrats flipped 16 seats in the Pennsylvania legislature.

“The bleeding hasn’t stopped since then,” Isenstadt and Otterbein report. “In a special election this month, Democrats won a state Senate seat in a district that Trump carried in 2016. Nationally, it was the first such legislative seat that Democrats flipped this year, prompting grumbling among some Republicans that the state party did not invest enough in turning out voters.”

Further, Trump isn’t faring well in Pennsylvania polls: Isenstadt and Otterbein note that a Franklin & Marshall College poll, released in March, found that Trump’s approval among registered Pennsylvania voters was only 34%.

“We will not solve this epidemic overnight,” the President told attendees, mostly experts and stakeholders in battling prescription drug and opioid abuse. “But we will stop…” the President said, literally stopping.

Trump paused, his hand still in the air.

“There’s just nothing going to stop us,” he clearly ad-libbed. “No matter how you cut it. I know some of the people in this room. Nothing stops you,” he said, pointing to the room.

“Nothing stops you, I can tell you,” he said, pointing to a different section of attendees.

“We will never stop, until our job is done,” Trump told the audience, apparently in a live update to his written speech. “And then maybe we’ll have to find something new. And I hope that’s going to be soon, but we will succeed. We have results that are unbelievable,” he added.

While speaking at an event on opioid abuse, the president argued that pharmaceutical companies are giving European countries better prices than they give U.S. customers.

Trump vowed to stop the practice and called his promise “a big deal.”

“At long last we’re stopping drug companies in foreign countries from rigging the system,” Trump said before straying from his prepared remarks.

“I know all about the rigging of the system because I had the system rigged on me,” the president said, likely referring to special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.

“I think you know what I’m talking about,” Trump added. “Unfortunately, that will be your soundbite tonight but that’s okay. The system was rigged!”
