Democrats nominating Ward Armstrong to Federal Judgeship

I just received this from the group Ultra Violet - I am disgusted and sad that they would do this. There is also an article at http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2014/06/13/3448710/two-democratic-senators-push-pro-life-pro-gun-anti-obamacare-lawmaker-for-the-federal-bench/

I did a search and didn't find anything on DU.

Ward Armstrong is NOT a Democrat by any means.

This is outrageous--two Democratic Senators are asking President Obama to nominate a conservative anti-choice, anti-woman judge for the federal bench.

Ward Armstrong voted to end the Affordable Care Act and to close Virginia abortion clinics. He's also supported allowing handguns in bars and a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. And there's also his gross sexism, such as joking that a female lawmaker was "coming over to my place later" and comparing her to Monica Lewinsky.

It's critical that we derail his potential nomination. That's why I signed this petition to President Obama. Will you join me?

Indonesian villagers cooking with gas and paying for healthcare - from garbage

What a great way to recycle and re-use:

June 15 - A community in East Java, Indonesia, is turning methane from the local garbage dump into gas for more than 400 homes. Local authorities have set up a system where methane produced by rotting waste is extracted and pumped to villages nearby, turning greenhouse gas emissions into useful energy. Tara Cleary reports.

http://business.topnewstoday.org/business/article/13787860/

Mahmud hauls bags full of rubbish to the small, dilapidated clinic next to a busy road on Indonesia's main island of Java several times a month.
There he exchanges grubby cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and other garbage for something he would struggle to afford otherwise -- medical treatment.
"I know I can sell my garbage here so I keep it," said the 60-year-old, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. "I used to throw everything onto the street but I have started telling myself that actually the garbage is useful."
People who want treatment at the clinics bring in rubbish once a week on Saturdays. They must collect 10,000 rupiah (90 US cents) worth of garbage every month to be a member of the scheme, and this qualifies them for two visits a month.
Different types of rubbish are worth different amounts, according to Albinsaid. Organic waste can be turned in to fertiliser which is sold to farmers, and other materials, such as plastic and metal, are bought by rubbish collectors who process it and sell it on.

Brat - a Christian Reconstructionist and Ayn Rand follower

While I am happy about Cantor's defeat, I can't help but be worried about Brat.

It was only last week that people were sounding the death knell for the tea party and yet Brat has an over whelming win.

Brat basically ran this race on his own, without support from the major tea party backers. That is going to change and there is going to be a lot of money (and vitriole) thrown against Tremmell.

And looking at Brat's background he is going to garner a lot of votes from the crazies out there......

This is a good quick and scary read.............

Brat is a strict Christian Reconstructionist, which means that he supports a theocratic government and holds extraordinarily radical beliefs when it comes to the role that God should play in the lives of believers and non-believers alike. As far as Reconstructionists are concerned, the Bible is the standard for morality that all must adhere to and those in violation of its tenets as they interpret them — gays, blasphemers, the irredeemably sinful — should be subject to punishment by the state. In fact, Rousas John Rushdoony, who founded the Calvinist-based sect, declared that Christianity and democracy were “inevitably enemies.”
Lovely. Another asshole clinging to ancient superstition and ready to disregard thousands of years of scientific advancement and human enlightenment is likely going to become one of the 435 “superlatives” we’ve chosen to sit in our House of Representatives. There are plenty of reasons why this country is completely fucked and has been allowed to degenerate into utter madness, but the fact that we not only sanction a belief in bronze-age fairy-tales but actually elevate it to government office has got to be somewhere near the core of the problem. Both parties do it but only the GOP and its Tea Party insurgents have explicit intellectual violence actually written into their charter. They don’t trust nor care one bit about provable science, but they sure as hell will drop the name of the Lord every few minutes like there’s a Skinner Box treat in it for them.
And what’s worse is that Brat isn’t even some cynical prick pandering to his constituency — he’s a True Believer. In the year 2014 he holds tightly to the idea that everyone should be mandated to follow the commands of a 2,000-year-old book written by people who by modern standards knew almost nothing about anything.

The top judge in Alabama believes that the law and the courts cannot function without God.

The top judge in Alabama believes that the law and the courts cannot function without God.

Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore made that claim at the Pierce County Prayer Breakfast in Tacoma, Washington in May while discussing the addition of “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance.

The chief justice said Americans had forgotten that there was no comma between “one nation” and “under God” in the Pledge.

“When we say the Pledge, we say ‘I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation’ and we pause,” he remarked. “They didn’t mean for us to pause, ladies and gentlemen, and that pause has cost us a lot.”

“It has cost a lot because we have forgotten that God is intimately connected with this nation,” Moore continued. “Without God there would be no nation. Without God there would be no freedom to believe what you want. That goes all the way back to people like Thomas Jefferson in his bill for religious freedom. He knew what it meant. He knew the limits of civil government, and he knew who gave us that freedom to believe what we want about God, but it comes from God.”

Reading a 1954 legislative report from the House of Representatives, the chief justice noted that “under God” had been added to the Pledge to contrast values of the United States with the values of the Soviet Union, whose communist doctrine was explicitly anti-religious.

The legislative report stated that “under God” didn’t violate the First Amendment’s prohibition of a government establishment of religion because there was a difference between “the existences of a religion as an institution and a belief in the sovereignty of God.”

Moore implored the audience to remember that “God is not religion.”

“God is sovereign over our government and over our law,” he said. “And when we are lead to believe anything else, when we exclude him from our lives, exclude him from our law, exclude him from our courts, then they will fail.”

Moore was removed from office in 2003 for defying a federal judge’s order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the Alabama Supreme Court building. Moore was re-elected as the state’s chief justice in 2012.

89-year-old veteran reported missing from a nursing home was found in France

An 89-year-old veteran reported missing from a nursing home was found in France marking the anniversary of the D-day landings. The pensioner, who left wearing his war medals, has contacted the home and said his friends are going to make sure he gets back safely when the commemorations end.
Sussex police were called at 7.15pm on Thursday by staff at the Pines care home, Furze Hill, in Hove, who said an 89-year-old who lived there had gone out at 10.30am and had not been seen since. He had gone out wearing a grey mackintosh and a jacket underneath with his war medals on, police said.

After several hours of searching, the retirement home received a call and called off the search:
The nursing home received a phone call from a younger veteran from Brighton at 10.30pm who said he had met the pensioner on a coach on the way to France and that they were safe and well in a hotel in Ouistreham.

Early reports indicated the nursing home didn't want him to go, but they are refuting the story and are expected to make an announcement soon.
