Senate Republicans open door to weakening the filibuster
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is opening the door to changing the filibuster in response to growing pressure from Republicans angered that Democrats have blocked legislation from reaching the White House.
McConnell has appointed a special task force to explore changes to the filibuster rule and other procedural hurdles including whether to eliminate filibusters on motions to proceed to legislation. Thats a tactic the minority often uses to shut down a bill before amendments can be considered
McConnell has tapped his close ally, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), and Senate Rules Committee Chairman Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) to form a task force with Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) and two other freshmen to weigh various reforms. They hope to implement the changes at the start of next year.
Were going to take a serious look at whether Senate rules ought to be changed in order to make the Senate work more effectively, Alexander said.

Supporters of ending the oil-export ban eye a deal
A bill to undo the decades-old federal ban on crude oil exports hits the House floor this week, but the measures supporters are still looking for the compromise package that can get it through Congress and win President Obamas signature.
Most lawmakers backing the effort at this point are Republicans, but several Democrats have opened the door to crafting some type of deal to lift the ban while securing concessions of their own.
But the path forward is complicated: Democrats who have indicated potential support for crude exports require different things to do so. And bill supporters need to craft a deal thats good enough to retain Republican support while securing approval of a reluctant president.

Obama Threatens To Veto Republican Bill That Would Undo Consumer Protections
Every single Republican presidential candidate has vowed to kill the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) if they are elected to be the nations next president. Getting rid of consumer protections in near the top of the to-do list for the Republican Party.
The current bill, which is misnamed the Homebuyers Assistance Act, would set the country back on the path to the bad old days that created Great Recession. Risky mortgages caused many people to lose their homes, and Republicans are anxious to repeat the mistakes of their recent past.
President Obamas veto threat wont get any attention in the mainstream press, but his willingness to fight for ordinary Americans is why he is more important now than ever, and the stakes in 2016 couldnt be higher.

both sides are not the same - this will go away if people sit out this election
Pelosi threatens to end Dem participation in Benghazi probe
Pelosi said McCarthys comments show the panel is political, unethical and should be dismantled. It's just a stunning admission on the part of the Republican leader that the Benghazi Committee was created with a political purpose in mind. In fact, it's really an ethical question, Pelosi said during a press briefing in the Capitol. It makes the whole operation practically an unethical operation.
Pelosi said Democrats will continue to participate in the panel for now, but she suggested that could end if they deem the panel unserious.
It's obvious that it should be disbanded based on the leader's own words. But since we recognize Republicans do not intend to do that I would encourage my members to continue to participate, and then we will see how much longer they want this to go on, Pelosi said. How long we will participate depends on how serious they are, and we haven't seen any signs of seriousness.
