elmac's JournalCivil rights group condemns move to block Trump inauguration protests
Source: france24
A civil rights group on Wednesday urged US officials to free up Washington landmarks for thousands of people planning protests around the inauguration of president-elect Donald Trump.
The Washington-based Partnership for Civil Justice Fund (PCJF) said the National Park Service (NPS) had handed over control of sites such as the Lincoln Memorial to the private committee overseeing Trumps inauguration weeks before and after the ceremony on January 20.
That move has left at least a dozen protest groups without prime venues, a violation of Americans constitutional rights, fund officials said. The Lincoln Memorial is a symbolic reminder as the site of 1960s protests for civil rights and against the Vietnam War.
The National Park Service has done a massive land grab inhibiting all those who want to exercise their right to free speech, Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, a constitutional rights lawyer and PCJF executive director, said at a news conference.

Michigan absentee balloting up 19% so far compared to 2012
A total of 724,599 absentee ballots had been received by Michigan election clerks as of Monday morning, a 19 percent increase over 2012 at this point in the election cycle, according to the Michigan Secretary of State's office.
"We don't know if that means more people are voting overall this year or just more are voting earlier," said Fred Woodhams, spokesman for the office.

Police say she was one of 27 people arrested on charges of criminal trespass and engaging in a riot.
In the Facebook Live footage, Ms Woodley, 24, said she had been walking peacefully back to her vehicle when "they grabbed me by my jacket and said that I wasn't allowed to continue... and they have giant guns and batons and zip ties and they are not letting me go".

Russia Withdraws From Plutonium Disposal Treaty
Source: The New York Times
MOSCOW Saying relations with the United States have deteriorated into a radically changed environment of threat and instability, President Vladimir V. Putin withdrew Russia on Monday from a plutonium disposal treaty that was one of the framework nuclear disarmament deals of the early post-Cold War period.
The treaty, signed in 2000, required Russia and the United States to destroy military stockpiles of plutonium, the radioactive material used in some bomb cores, in a deal presented as yet another step away from nuclear doomsday.
The deal has no bearing on the numbers of nuclear weapons deployed by Russia or the United States. Instead, it concerns 34 tons of plutonium in storage in each country that might go into a future arsenal.
Still, the abrogation signals that the nuclear agreements that accompanied the breakup of the Soviet Union and were to lead the world back from the hair-trigger brink of atomic conflict could be open to revision, as Russias relations with the West sour on a range of disputes today, including Syria and Ukraine and the Kremlins interference in the domestic politics of Western democracies.

Pigs of War by Black Sabbath
After celebrating another 4th we still find ourselves in a decades long state of war. Not a big Black Sabbath fan but they pretty much nailed it.
Politicians hide themselves away,
They only started the war.
Why should they go out to fight,
They leave that role to the poor.
