Indictment Vs. Impeachment: Do We Have A President, Or A King?

There was an extended and spirited discussion on AM Joy of the issue of whether Trump can be indicted while in office, and the general conclusion was: We have to figure out a way to do it, or we're no longer a country of laws.

Speaking about the Cohen case and Trump's culpability, former prosecutor Mimi Rocah said, "I would bring that crime to the grand jury right now. I would do that. One other thing, I think both are right in terms of the yes or no, can he be indicted.

"As a practical matter, if I'm putting myself as a prosecutor now in the Southern District, I can't indict him. I have that OLC opinion. I have to follow it. Can that be challenged? Should that be revisited? Yes, absolutely for a lot of the reasons we're saying, especially with this president, where a lot of the rationales and justifications behind that OLC memo just don't make sense."

White Nationalists Are Infiltrating The Pro-Life Movement To Recruit Misogynists

Truthout reports on a new recruiting ground for white nationalists of the alt-right: The anti-choice movement.

Attacks on reproductive rights are nothing new, but fascist groups’ infiltration of anti-choice groups and recruiting around anti-choice organizing in their genocidal agenda is an escalation. Leaked conversations between white supremacist groups using the Discord messaging site show users discussing recruiting members based on their opposition to abortion rights.

When I first saw this article, I mistakenly believed that it was an older piece that had been recycled on Facebook. I thought that this was a different perspective on the well-documented tactic of white nationalists recruiting misogynists from the MRA movement. But, no, this is the same concept applied to a completely different group of people who also happen to hate women.
----------
And that brings us back to why white nationalists are finding the pro-life movement such a, ahem, fertile recruiting ground. White nationalism is, at its core, a movement centered around angry white men. These men are insecure in the extreme and looking for something, anything, to make them feel strong again. As any bully can tell you, the easiest route to a feeling of power is to oppress someone else.

This Is How a Woman Gets Written Out of Her Own Obituary

Sondra Locke has died. She was a director and Oscar-nominated actress, but by The Hollywood Reporter’s account, she was just Clint Eastwood’s money-grubbing ex-girlfriend.

On Thursday, THR ran an obituary for Locke, originally headlined “Actress Sondra Locke, Embittered Ex of Clint Eastwood, Dies at 74.”
------
Sondra Locke’s death should be a chance to look back on her life and recognize, in 2018, all that the press missed, and what we still miss when we cover the lives of women overshadowed by powerful men. The press in the 1980s and ’90s chose to frame her relationship with Eastwood not as an abuse of power, but gossipy tabloid fare, with her at fault for the destruction of her career. And considering The Hollywood Reporter’s account of her life, it’s clear that we haven’t moved beyond that framing.

Federal judge rules Obamacare unconstitutional

A U.S. federal judge in Texas ruled on Friday that the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, is unconstitutional, a decision that was likely to be appealed to the Supreme Court.

U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor in Fort Worth agreed with a coalition of 20 states that a change in tax law last year eliminating a penalty for not having health insurance invalidated the entire Obamacare law.

To be fair - as he thinks all women should be barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen his stance probably seems logical to him...

Are we living in a Post-Feminist society?

The term post-feminist is used to refer to young women, "who are thought to benefit from the women's movement through expanded access to employment and education and new family arrangements but at the same time do not push for further political change,"

I grew up as a child of Thatcher. Everyday throughout my teens I saw the leader of my country whip male leaders across the world into shape without batting an eyelid. That, alongside the struggles that the women who came before in the feminist movement, meant that I was of the first generation who truly believed that they could be as accomplished and successful as their male counterpart. Of course, the world of work came as a bit of shock, paternalistic attitudes were still prevalent in the early 1990’s and the glass ceiling remained. We have been chipping away at both ever since. One of the outcomes of the successes that have been won in the work place is a new feeling among young women that feminism is soooo last century. That they do not need to be feminist.

On the day of the last general election in the UK, I asked my female members of staff at what time did they plan to go and vote. All young women at the start of their careers they looked at me as if I was talking a foreign language. Shrugged their shoulders and to a one said they had no plans to vote that day. I was aghast and immediately launched into a, I have to confess, somewhat strident lecture about the suffragette movement. Had they never heard of Emily Pankhurst, I asked. Seemingly they had not, and moreover could not see the relevance of her heroism in their lives today. But even if these young women failed to understand the importance of their role in society, and using their voice, does that mean we are living in a post-feminist society? Or does it mean that we have regressed rather than progressed? Because on the surface we are more equal that we have been, right? We fought the good fight and won many battles. Young women today have more opportunities than any generation before them, they have more freedom of choice and nothing seems impossible. However, we still live in a patriarchal society. Fundamentally we still have a male ruling class, making the rules and limiting choices in some places, for young women.

Are we living in a post-feminist society? If so, we really need to figure out how to get back to a feminist society.
