Politico: Republicans attack Facebook as network shuts down anti-lockdown protests

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/20/facebook-shuts-down-anti-quarantine-protests-at-states-request-196143

The social network has already removed protest messages in California, New Jersey and Nebraska

Facebook is blocking anti-quarantine protesters from using the site to organize in-person gatherings that violate states' stay-at-home orders — a move that had brought an immediate backlash from conservatives including President Donald Trump's eldest son.

The world’s largest social network has removed protest messages in California, New Jersey and Nebraska from its site, a company spokesperson said Monday, after days of rallies across state capitals where protesters — many carrying pro-Trump signs — called for an end to the health restrictions.

NPR: Expert Warns Of 'Real Festival Of Partisan Gerrymandering' In 2021

https://www.npr.org/2020/04/19/836260800/expert-warns-of-real-festival-of-partisan-gerrymandering-in-2021

In writing his new book, David Daley was looking to shake off a cynicism that had been following him around for years.

The former editor-in-chief of Salon gained attention in 2016, as the man who chronicled a Republican gerrymandering machine.

Daley's book Ratf**ked gave a play-by-play account of REDMAP, the Republican plan to take over state legislatures in the 2010 election cycle, with an eye on drawing state and congressional maps during the following year's redistricting period that would keep Democrats out of power.

It worked.

Medical Staffing Companies Cut Doctors' Pay While Spending Millions on Political Ads

https://www.propublica.org/article/medical-staffing-companies-cut-doctors-pay-while-spending-millions-on-political-ads

While cutting benefits for emergency room doctors and other medical workers, TeamHealth and Envision have spent millions on ads meant to pressure politicians working on legislation to cap out-of-network costs for Americans.

Private equity-backed medical staffing companies that have cut doctors’ pay are continuing to spend millions on political ads, according to Federal Communications Commission disclosures.

The ads amount to $2.2 million since Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar declared a public health emergency on Jan. 31. About $1.2 million has been spent since President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration on March 13, the disclosures show.

The companies behind the ads, TeamHealth and Envision Healthcare, are among the staffing firms that have cut pay and benefits for emergency room doctors and other medical workers. The companies say the cuts are needed to cope with falling income because non-coronavirus patients are avoiding hospitals. Executives at TeamHealth and Envision also took pay cuts.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced Monday that the state’s Safer at Home order will expire April 30, and the state will begin reopening its economy.

Lee said most businesses in the state will be allowed to open May 1, but he stressed that protective measures must continue.

“Social distancing must continue, but our economic shutdown cannot,” Lee said. “While I am not extending the safer at home order past the end of April, we are working directly with our major metropolitan areas to ensure they are in a position to reopen as soon and safely as possible. Social distancing works, and as we open up our economy, it will be more important than ever that we keep social distancing as lives and livelihoods depend on it.”

Lee said he will work with health departments in metropolitan areas like Shelby, Madison, Davidson, Hamilton, Knox and Sullivan counties as they plan their own strategies to begin reopening.

The federal agency that oversees nursing homes announced new transparency measures on Sunday requiring the disclosure of coronavirus cases to families of patients and public health officials.

Speaking during a White House briefing, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator Seema Verma called the new policies “important” and said they will support a nationwide effort to track the virus and slow its spread.

"As we reopen the United States, our surveillance effort around the virus will begin in nursing homes," Verma said.

It wasn't clear when the new reporting system would take effect. In a memo Sunday, the agency said it would be put into place "very soon."

The ‘Spanish’ flu outbreak of 1918 is playing out just like ‘reopen’ protesters are in 2020: report
Published 1 min ago on April 19, 2020By Sarah K. Burris

National Public Radio reporter Tim Mak wrote an extensive Twitter thread after researching the way the flu outbreak spread throughout the United States in the early 20th century.

It began in San Francisco in Sept. 2018, he explained, and people were successfully wearing masks and cases were dropping. By November, public health officials said the city could reopen.

“Residents rushed to entertainment venues after having been denied this communal joy for months. The mayor himself was fined by his own police chief after going to a show without a mask,” said Mak.
