The Day 1 Families Fund gave a total of $105.9 million in grants to 42 nonprofits in 24 states across the country. In Georgia, MUST Ministries was awarded $5 million, and HOPE Atlanta got $2.5 million.
“We feel like we got a Christmas miracle,” said Dwight “Ike” Reighard, the president and CEO of MUST Ministries, which is based in Marietta. “We’re just very thankful.”
He said the organization will use some of the funds to build its new homeless shelter, which it broke ground on earlier this year.

147-Count Indictment Includes Inmates Orchestrating Murder, Kidnapping, Drugs and Firearms Distribution from Prison
A federal grand jury has returned a 147-count superseding indictment against 40 defendants across South Carolina in the largest federal racketeering conspiracy in South Carolina history.
The indictment alleges a sprawling criminal enterprise whereby inmates with the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC), often through the use of contraband cell phones, orchestrated murder, kidnapping, firearms distribution, and an international drug operation.
The grand jury returned an indictment charging the defendants with conspiracy under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, and several charges under the Violent Crimes in Aid of Racketeering (VICAR) statute.
Of the 40 defendants, 24 defendants were charged in the initial indictment in this case for conduct related to their alleged roles in the drug trafficking organization.
“The defendants allegedly operated a violent and lucrative drug enterprise on behalf of the Insane Gangster Disciples while incarcerated,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Brian C. Rabbitt of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “The department is committed to investigating and prosecuting gang-related crimes no matter where they occur, including holding those accountable who engage in criminal activity while in prison.”More....

..I hope will be the focus as she retires.
From LGBTQ to women's rights, Diane Feinstein was a leader when the Senate & House was run solidly by men.
I detest the focus of this woman's career being one of mocking & demoralizing as a disease of aging that touches most everyone's life in some way, now takes hold in one of our most accomplished women of our legislature.
I find it utterly disgusting that articles are now being written critiqing Sen Feinstein's health & with the focus on her incapacities with scant honor towards her lifelong works.
I am still waiting for some actual journalist to write a tribute of honor for all the barrier breaking & hard fought successes Sen Feinstein has clawed her way through to hand dignity to women, LGBTQ & so much more.
Media can & should do far better for our aging heros, whether it be celebrities, Politicians or our own blessed Parents & Grandparents.
The comments denigrating Sen Feinstein I've been seeing is a damned shame on this society.

But headlines from distant states do not capture the horror of a hospital without enough intensive-care beds.
I was an anesthesiology resident in a large academic medical center at the peak of the pandemic in New York City this spring.
During a time when journalists had little access to what was happening inside New York hospitals, I wrote regular email updates to friends and family.
These messages—edited for length and clarity below—showcase the frightening reality of what care looks like in an overwhelmed hospital. (Where I describe individual cases in significant detail, I’ve obtained the consent of the patient or family in question.)
The emails relate the experiences of health-care workers, and young doctors in particular: the anxiety, the fear, the overwhelming responsibility, and the ethical burden of hard decisions. Even after the pandemic is over, the weight of these experiences will remain with us for a lifetime.
These messages form a chronicle of what COVID-19 has already done in America and a reminder of what it could do again this winter.
Here begins the chronicled story:
THURSDAY, MARCH 26
A senior anesthesiology resident holds the stat intubation pager, which goes off when a patient anywhere in the hospital needs a breathing tube right away. My co-residents and I first noticed that things were changing when the pager started to go off every few hours, and then every hour. When the hospital ran out of ICU beds, my department swiftly converted our operating rooms into a giant ICU.
A co-resident and I spent Tuesday pushing beds and anesthesia machines around to plan how to fit up to four beds in an operating room. The “OR-ICU” fits multiple COVID-19 patients into one operating room, ventilated via the anesthesia machine’s ventilators.
Their daytime doctor, an anesthesia resident in PPE, doesn’t leave their side until their nighttime doctor—another anesthesia resident in PPE—comes to take over.
On Tuesday night, one of my co-residents did 17 emergency intubations. Upon running to respond to yet another intubation page, she was horrified to see that the patient was one of our supervising physicians.

...We saw for the first time that this patient was a teacher. The website had hundreds of comments from students and parents: “We are thinking of you every day!” and “We are praying that you make it through this!”
There were dozens of photos of a middle-aged man with his students—in the classroom, at school sporting events, wearing different silly costumes. He had a huge, toothy grin.
My intern stared at the website, stunned. It took my breath away.
My attending physician said, “I can’t look at this. Please close it.” We get through our day in the OR-ICU by compartmentalizing—by ignoring the fact that our patients are people who are deeply suffering.
When reality cuts through our fantasy, the job can be unbearable.

President-elect Joe Biden is expected to nominate Katherine Tai as US Trade Representative, three sources familiar with the decision confirmed to CNN.
Tai currently is the top Democratic trade counsel for the House Ways and Means Committee and oversaw trade enforcement for China during the Obama administration.
As an Asian-American, she is the latest diverse figure expected to be named to a Cabinet-level post in the incoming Biden administration. If confirmed, Tai would be the first woman of color to serve in the role.

Tai was named to her role on Capitol Hill in 2017 after serving three years as trade counsel for the Ways and Means Committee. She served in the Office of the General Counsel in the Office of the US Trade Representative from 2007 to 2014, including as chief counsel for China Trade Enforcement from 2011 to 2014.
Tai played a key role in negotiating trade policy for Democrats in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which came under Trump's administration. The USMCA replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement, which was approved under President Bill Clinton.
The USMCA was signed by Trump and his Mexican and Canadian counterparts in 2018, and then Congress approved the trade agreement earlier this year after Democrats added stronger labor rules
