About Me

Thank you Democratic Underground for keeping me sane for the last four years. I think I was probably the longest lurker here. I started following DU during the Dubya administration. I was first attracted to the "Top Ten Conservative Idiots of the Week." I've been following along ever since. I always felt guilty for not participating, but refrained from doing so because I already spend way too much time online. However, after recent events, I just can't sit back any longer. I had to log on and thank you folks for all that you do. I'm a retired TV newscast director with forty years experience and more than eighteen thousand broadcasts under my belt, most of them live. I now travel the country (when I can) shooting landscape, astro and wildlife photography. You can see some of my photos at Ross-Kestin.Pixels.com or on Instagram at @oldguywithacamera. Thanks again! ***Submission Thread for the April Contest: BEAUTY IN BLACK & WHITE.***

***TIME FOR SECOND ENTRIES! I'LL LOCK THE POST AT THIRTY ENTRIES.***

I'll try to post the preliminary rounds tomorrow.

The theme this month, chosen by the previous winner George McGovern, is “beauty in black and white, anything and everything in black and white.”

HERE ARE THE BASIC RULES OF SUBMISSION:

Only one entry per person, and it must be a photograph you took yourself. You need to post your entry in the submission thread started by the Host of the contest. Please be sure to include a "Title" for your photograph in the Subject line of your post. The submission thread is for photo entries only, no comments or questions.

The Volunteer Host is allowed to enter the Contest.

Please keep your entry no larger than 1024 pixels in its longest dimension and under 675K in file size and limit photo editing to a reasonable amount.

Once a photo is entered in a contest it is ineligible for any future contest unless the Host specifies otherwise.

CONTEST LICENSE:

An entrant to this contest (original work), by submitting a photograph, is giving permission for that photograph to be copied to Demopedia or to a linked Gallery and included in a DU Calendar that will display the photographs entered for this contest for the purpose of publicizing future contests and/or commemorating current and past contests. The entrant retains all other rights to the photograph being submitted. Neither Demopedia and/or a linked Gallery may use any photograph submitted for any purpose other than to display the photograph being submitted by the entrant, and neither gains any real or implied ownership rights to the photograph.

Please, no comments or questions in this thread! Those make my job a lot more difficult. I will post a thread for questions and comments shortly after I post this Submissions thread!

Finally, this is the first time I am running the contest. Please bear with me if I mess it up.

***FOUR MORE DAYS TO THE APRIL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST***

Hi all,

It's time to get our entries for the April photography contest ready. I'll be posting the submission thread on Wednesday, April 6th. The thread will stay open until April 14th or whenever we get thirty entries. (It usually doesn't take that long).

George McGovern, winner of the previous contest, has chosen the theme "Beauty in Black and White." This would include any and all things in black and white that you think might fit the subject matter.

Please don't forget to keep your entry no larger than 1024 pixels in its longest dimension and under 675K in file size and limit photo editing to a reasonable amount. I can help if you have trouble resizing your entry.

This is my first time running the contest, so wish me luck!

Grumpy!

**PRELIMINARY TIMELINE FOR THE APRIL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST**

Hi folks,

Here is a preliminary timeline for the April Photography contest. It's not written in stone, but this should work out.

George McGovern, winner of the previous contest, has chosen the theme "Beauty in Black and White." This would include any and all things in black and white that you think might fit the subject matter.

So here is the tentative timeline. I reserve the right to make minor changes in this schedule.

Now until April 5th: Go through your archives and see what you have, or better yet, go out and shoot some new subjects. Many people who produce black and white usually shoot the originals in color, and then convert them to B&W. However, you can also set most cameras to B&W while you're shooting, which may help you visualize your final image. Also, if you're like me, you may have boxes and boxes of old Tri-X and Ilford images.

April 6th to April 14th: Submissions. Submissions will end when there are 30 photos. Each photographer may submit one photograph unless I open the contest for a second one later on. I'll do that if we go a day or two without a submission.

April 15th - April 17th: Preliminary Threads

April 18th - April 20th: Finals Thread

April 21st: Announcement of the winners.

One final note: This is my first time running the contest. I'll do my best not to mess it up, but your patience will be appreciated if I do.

The moon rises over the Vincent Thomas Bridge.

This is a first edit. I want to work on it a little more to see if I can bring out some detail in the moon.

I always thought I was a Russian Jew.

Growing up in the fifties, my parents always told my brothers and me that we were half Russian and half Hungarian. Our paternal grandparents immigrated from Russia, and our maternal grandparents immigrated from Hungary. Needless to say, we always felt a special connection to "Fiddler On The Roof," as that was probably the circumstances our grandparents experienced. As far as we know, no one from our European family survived the Holocaust.

With adulthood came the birth of services like Ancestry.com and others like it. Several members of my family did genealogy searches, tracing our grandparents and others in the family back as far as they could. One of the things we learned was that our Russian family came from the area around Odessa. It never occurred to me that my dad's side actually came from Ukraine, not Russia. I'm guessing the reason for that is that, at the time of their immigration, Ukraine was probably considered part of Russia or the U.S.S.R, and they considered themselves Russian. In my ignorance of geography, I had no idea that Odessa was in Ukraine, and not Russia as we know it today.

This has definitely affected me as I watch events unfold on the other side of the world. All this time I had no idea that my family was from Ukraine, and not Russia or the U.S.S.R. It's a very strange feeling to learn that there is a connection there that I never knew I had.

Bolsa Chica Wetlands Reserve

Bolsa Chica is one of the California birders' favorite spots. It didn't disappoint yesterday. I saw, and photographed, my first kingfisher.
