Chipotle reaches $3 million settlement with city on alleged labor-law violations. Here’s how West Seattle factors into it

April 11, 2024 10:19 pm

The city Office of Labor Standards announced today that it has settled with Chipotle over alleged labor-law violations at eight area restaurants. We confirmed with the city that the West Seattle location (opened nine years ago at 4730 California SW) is one of them. First, from the city announcement, here are the basics:

The Office of Labor Standards (OLS) investigated Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. for alleged violations of the Secure Scheduling and Paid Sick and Safe Time (PSST) Ordinances throughout Chipotle’s eight operations in Seattle.

Senator Cantwell D-WA: Restoration of Puyallup tribal lands

Legislation to Spur Economic Development for Puyallup Tribe Heads to President Biden’s Desk

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Patty Murray (D-WA), and Representatives Derek Kilmer (D, WA-06) and Marilyn Strickland (D, WA-10) celebrated the House passage of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians Land into Trust Act. The bill now heads to President Biden’s desk for signature.

The Puyallup Tribe of Indians Land Into Trust Act (S. 382) places more than 17 acres of land currently owned by the Puyallup Tribe into trust, restoring part of the Tribe’s ancestral homeland and facilitating new economic development and job creation opportunities at the Port of Tacoma and on the Tacoma waterfront.

“Legislation helping the Puyallup Tribe create jobs in South Puget Sound is headed to the President’s desk to be signed into law. The Puyallup Tribe is an economic force and taking this land into trust allows the Tribe to continue to diversify its economy within its traditional lands on Commencement Bay,” said Sen. Cantwell.

“Bringing this land into trust will help the Puyallup Tribe pursue economic development on the Tacoma waterfront, expand critical infrastructure, and open up tax benefits for the entire community—not to mention that this bill will also restore part of the Tribe’s ancestral homeland, which matters a great deal,” said Sen. Murray. “I was proud to work with my colleagues on this legislation and am thrilled that our bill is now headed to President Biden’s desk. Ensuring that Tribal communities have what they need to grow and thrive is an important responsibility of the federal government and something I will always take seriously.”

A deadly storm is bringing extreme rainfall and dangerous tornadoes to the South, with the severe weather stretching from Texas to Louisiana to Mississippi to Alabama to Florida.

Three tornadoes have been confirmed so far: two in Louisiana and one in Texas.

One of the confirmed tornadoes ripped through Slidell, Louisiana, about 30 miles outside of New Orleans, damaging buildings and downing power lines as rain pounded the town.

However, Fandal said authorities have described the damage in Slidell and parts of St. Tammany Parish as "catastrophic."

According to authorities, hundreds of homes were damaged from the storm in St. Tammany Parish, and likely just under a hundred were damaged within the city limits of Slidell. Over 50 people were evacuated from an apartment complex damaged by the storm, Slidell Fire Chief Chris Kaufmann said in the briefing.

‘So weird and beautiful’: readers’ nominations for invertebrate of the year

We asked readers for their favourite spineless wonders and were not disappointed. There are a few days left for nominations

Wed 10 Apr 2024 09.39 EDT

Tunnellers, fliers, crawlers: your nominations for the UK invertebrate of the year have been pouring in, paying tribute to these wonderful creatures and testifying over and over again to the wonder and awe that they inspire.

We still have a few days till the voting starts, and we haven’t yet worked out which of your many, many suggestions will be added to the list – but the love and enthusiasm for the UK’s invertebrates has bowled us over, so we thought we’d round up some of the tributes to your favourite spineless creatures here.

Please keep sending us your thoughts, and get ready to vote this weekend.

The first time I saw one up close I couldn’t believe my eyes. So weird and beautiful. It was when I had been made redundant from a job I hated and was trying to figure out what to do next. My neighbour’s children were transfixed by the hawk-moth and I took delight in their curiosity. That’s when I decided to go into teaching. I still only see one very occasionally, they are quite rare. Inspirational insects deserve recognition. Kate Jannaway, 51, works in SEND support for an FE college, Brighton

Tall tales but no dessert: the storyteller of Karachi and his ice-cream cart library

In a country where 77% of 10-year-olds are illiterate, a reading scheme in Pakistan is reaching thousands of children in slums

Pedalling down a narrow alleyway in Karachi’s crowded Lyari Town, Saira Bano slows as she passes a group of children sitting on the ground, listening to a man reading aloud from a book. The eight-year-old gets off her bike, slips off her sandals, and sits on the mat at the back.

“Instead of picking up bad habits – eating gutka [betel chewing tobacco] and learning abusive language – mothers said how relieved they were that their kids were spending time reading,” says Kazi.

It is not just children in the Lyari audience. “I have been watching this young man come in his ice-cream cart since last week,” says Rashida Ashraf, a local resident in her 60s. “He plays music, and soon the kids trickle in. There’s no ice-cream though.

“It’s nice,” she says. “It will open their minds.”

Human rights violated by Switzerland inaction on climate, ECHR rules in landmark case

Court finds in favour of group of older Swiss women who claimed weak policies put them at greater risk of death from heatwaves

Weak government climate policies violate fundamental human rights, the European court of human rights has ruled.

In a landmark decision on one of three major climate cases, the first such rulings by an international court, the ECHR raised judicial pressure on governments to stop filling the atmosphere with gases that make extreme weather more violent.

The court’s top bench ruled that Switzerland had violated the rights of a group of older Swiss women to family life, but threw out a French mayor’s case against France and that of a group of young Portuguese people against 32 European countries. “It feels like a mixed result because two of the cases were inadmissible,” said Corina Heri, a law researcher at the University of Zürich. “But actually it’s a huge success.”

The court, which calls itself “the conscience of Europe”, found that Switzerland had failed to comply with its duties to stop climate change. It also set out a path for organisations to bring further cases on behalf of applicants. The Swiss verdict opens up all 46 members of the Council of Europe to similar cases in national courts that they are likely to lose.

Scathing federal report rips Microsoft for shoddy security, insincerity in response to Chinese hack

Story by FRANK BAJAK, AP Technology Writer

BOSTON (AP) — In a scathing indictment of Microsoft corporate security and transparency, a Biden administration-appointed review board issued a report Tuesday saying “a cascade of errors” by the tech giant let state-backed Chinese cyber operators break into email accounts of senior U.S. officials including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

The Cyber Safety Review Board, created in 2021 by executive order, describes shoddy cybersecurity practices, a lax corporate culture and a lack of sincerity about the company's knowledge of the targeted breach, which affected multiple U.S. agencies that deal with China.

It concluded that “Microsoft's security culture was inadequate and requires an overhaul" given the company's ubiquity and critical role in the global technology ecosystem. Microsoft products “underpin essential services that support national security, the foundations of our economy, and public health and safety.”

"The grain is just beautiful," says a bearded man standing in the forest, cradling a long, spiralling stick that he found on the ground.

"It's cascading down almost waterfall-eque," he says in a video review as he gently caresses the metre-long, helix-shaped branch with his finger, before bringing it in for a deep sniff.

"Smells like sage," he says approvingly. "Some eucalyptus in there, too."
