Manufacturing in the auto industry for independent suppliers is a very large part of Michigan's employment. It is not at all uncommon for people to have short term layoffs now and then and people are used to it happening. People deal with it all the time with private employers.

You would think that people getting laid off for a couple weeks or so due to the shoutdown was somehow unprecedented just because it happens to government employees this time.


At least in this case they will most likely get back pay anyway once it ends. That is never the case for anyone working for the private sector.
