the protagonist is thrown in jail in a southern town that is owned by the mayor (trump) and the sheriff (Barr) and the judge (Kavenaugh)

I know, we did the best we could in blocking Barr and Kavenaugh. But in retrospect, those were seminal, laying-in-front-of-the-door moments. Add in the fact that Mueller took so long which gave trump time to place his blockers.
