When Trump is gone, we're going to have to find a way to bring our deluded friends and relatives back into something resembling normality. They will be dazed and frightened and perhaps angry. I'm coming to think the best we can do now is just maintain some congeniality so that they're not too humiliated and self-hating when the filthy smog surrounding them now passes.

Treat them as we would a child on a 4-year temper tantrum. Amused tolerance and a strong set of noise-cancelling headphones will help.

And no, I don't follow my own advice. I argue right back at them. But I wish I could be serene and gracious.
