to the right faster than he can keep up. Whether Romney is aware of how out of touch with reality his campaign becomes, he can't afford to correct the lies or the "stupid talking points" because this is what the stupid party wants and expects. Romney can't be specific without alienating everyone, including Republicans who supposedly want small government, as long as it's giving them medicare and social security, the mortgage housing deduction, the charitable deduction, agricultural subsidies, gas and oil subsidies, etc. I'm not so sure Romney inhabits "a world of unquestioning icon veneration and hero worship" as far as he's concerned. The icons and heroes are Ronald Reagan and Jack Kemp but Romney is on the outside looking in and having to constantly play up to the crazies or fall off the knife's edge. I think it's the Republican base that Romney has to play up to that is like a hothouse flower as much as Romney himself.
