His game is now gradually unraveling and the harder he tries to save it, the worse he makes it for himself. It's his catch-22 and well earned because his "power of positive thinking" may have allowed him to do whatever he likes to whomever he wants, (and excuse to get what you want, no holds barred), but nothing lasts forever as many dictators have found out.

He knows what he is guilty of and he is also facing, in his mind, his worst nightmare: to have his entire facade ripped off and to also become the biggest loser in American history because of the office he stole. It upped the ante for him.

That's a frightened little narcissistic child in there, but wasn't it obvious by his feigned toughness and crude behavior all along?
