I'm very sorry for your loss. It isn't unusual for patients to "That's it, I'm out of here" when family members have just left. Family can beat themselves up that "I didn't stay long enough" or "I didn't make it in time".
Some folks want to die alone. Some don't want family to be burdened or troubled by being present at a death. This is natural.
