...the "dead line".
It meant if you were carrying a gun over that boundary, they could actually kill you if you refused to surrender it.
Happened little if at all, but I think it was a PR warning.
"Turn your guns in as you enter time or we will pry it from your cold dead hands."
There are verified stories of people being knocked unconscious and jailed for refusing. But, I've never read anything about someone actually being killed for it. Most probably just said "Oh, I forgot. Here's my gun.
Famous old west towns like Tombstone, Deadwood, & Dodge City all used that term.
As a result, there were very few shootings because the only people armed were lawmen.
