It's what got the Catholics to become allied with the evangelicals, who didn't care that much about abortion until they realized they could use it as a wedge issue. There's no other issue I can think of that's caused as much emotional frenzy for so long. Nothing else has provoked the erection of billboards all over the place, for example.
