(10,969 posts)I have a friend who lives literally a block away from the Berkeley/Oakland border. He will not, under any circumstances, tell people he lives in Oakland. It is always Berkeley. He's Chinese-Canadian, so one day I said, "You're like the Simu Liu of Oakland!" It riles him up (in a fun, teasing way). Now, whenever he says he's from Berkeley when I'm around, I just start making Simu references.
I have a buddy up on Moraga who I house sat for once when I worked in Berkeley. Fenton's, so many boba shops with really good spicy chicken bites, all the restaurants along College. I'm gay, so White Horse is kind of over there (even if it always struck me as a bit methy).
But yeah, it's changed. I have friends who live in those new apartments that went up near Koreatown. A lot of those little stores that were there ten years ago have vanished. They've also somewhat tried improving the nightlife, but clubs keep coming and going, I can't keep track anymore. When Luka's closed, I felt that. I used to get oysters there with a buddy after we'd walk around the lake and catch up. I think Port is still there, but that's all pre-Covid. They had/have pretty good trivia nights.
