My father was raised in an extended family that was FDR Democrats. He loved politics, and from an early age learned that union workers should always vote for Democrats. I have letters he wrote as the union rep on the railroad, and they influenced my efforts as the county workers' union vp. His father wanted him to be a lawyer, but the law school he applied to said he needed to be a year older to get in, as he had graduated at an early age. So he started working on the railroad, and liked it enough that he didn't re-apply to pursue his education.
