In reply to the discussion: Democrats Should Not be trying to save the Republican Party. 🤷🏾♀️ [View all]Quite a lot of important stuff after 1863 were mostly passed by and/or with major support with Republicans. Basically for over a century, up until about the last 30-40 years truth be told.
Now, one can say the parties were slowly switching identities over the course of that time period, and to a large extent that is true. However, to make the cut off 1863 is at least a century too soon since that leaves off the Reconstruction Amendments, Civil Service Reform in the 1880s, Theodore Roosevelt, etc., etc.. Even a lot of presidents one would think of in some sort of villainous or corrupt fashion (like Warren Harding or Nixon for example) had things about them that we'd laud today (the former's Birmingham speech in 1921 probably being the most forceful on behalf of civil rights between Reconstruction and John F. Kennedy, the latter with OSHA and the Clean Air Act).
Right now, especially under Trump, the GOP is completely lost. But is wasn't THAT long ago that the party was still capable of helping the country out.
