(53,661 posts)Unlike other countries, it is not a National Holiday. So people are afraid to be late to work, or they are struggling to get to the polls in traffic or weather or can't find parking to get out and walk in.
Family members described how their GOP boss would make them work a 12 hour shift to make sure they could not to the polls before work started or the polls closed, which was 7 to 7 only. They even bragged how they would keep 'the blacks and Democrats' from voting. Americans have been disenfranchised by this process for years.
I had a union job and although I could not have made the drive to work on time in the morning, I made it when I got off before 7. They didn't mess with us. Now I live in a state with mail in voting, which eliminates all of this hardship.
