17. Drought is a discomfiting image.

Considering all of the other final entries, I notice that they (possibly with the exception of the sublime Summertime Skies) are images of living things and the water that makes life possible. My entry in the preliminaries was of an illuminated fountain show that took place in a region where there is an abundance of water (for now). Water enough to waste, it may seem.

The leaf looks brittle and prickly; it sits starkly against a black background, and in contrast to the vitality and bright colors of the other entries. The photographer’s skills are considerable, and a photo of lesser quality would not have had the same impact.

I don’t find Drought pleasant to behold. It's a reminder of the terror of our situation, which is why it got my vote.
