O'Donnell is not saying that illnesses should be hidden. He is saying that many of the leaders of the world that we consider, "the cream of the crop" were dealing with significant health problems, that did not prevent them from being the cream of the crop, but which, given the nature of judgement by people who do not know any better, would likely have lead to different outcomes.

Think about World War II without Churchill and/or FDR. Think about the Cuban Missile Crisis with Nixon at the helm instead of Kennedy.

Put those leaders in the media environment we find ourselves in now, they would have been run out of office just because they were perceived as ill.

You are absolutely correct, we do deserve transparency, HOWEVER, we also need to have the ability to understand nuance and complexity, which we absolutely, as a society, do not.

I guarantee you if it was found out that there was extraterrestrial life and they had visited or were coming to visit us, there would be complete panic and chaos as people would not be curious as to what, who, and why they were here, but our basest instincts would kick in.

We need to grow up and get smarter.
